Students spent the first week of class honing their existing skills through a variety of group activities. They collaborated on a variety of tasks that required them to work together and support one another to find solutions. Measurement, fractions, and number recognition were some of the topics covered by students from all grades. Our first week helped students understand the importance of numbers in their daily lives, not just at school.
This week’s work with our students concentrated on the nature and symbolisms of certain animals. Animals form important symbolisms in most cultures. To the point of animals becoming as human-like as we are. Children love to explore such a relationship between them and us. Mainly because they are much closer to them than us. Fundamentally, children are intelligent, young animals themselves.
The connection between fables and people has been around for thousands of years. Fables such as the “Frog and the scorpion” can shape the minds of the students’ growing mind for decades. To analyse these fables with the students, through verbal exchanges, through inquiry & writing and through art, constitutes the basis of their intellectual and cultural upbringing.
In Week 1, students have learned how to read and respond to books through summarization, in-class presentation, and some analysis. Other activities have included creating vocabulary banks and book interviews in pairs. Students all selected books from the fiction genre.

This week our topics are surface tension and microbes. We observed surface tension by dropping as many water drops as possible onto a coin. Through experimentation, we found out that a coin can hold 30 drops! More than we expected! Microbes, germs, and viruses are common in our life. We need to know about them and be able to live with them. We made our own hand sanitizer and learned how to wash our hands properly to stay healthy. It was really fun!
Coordination, Flexibility, discipline, basic techniques of defense and striking food work were introduced to students in the first week of summer school. All the classes were taught with discipline and fun.
