Mr. Xiong, Director of the Academic Affairs Office of Shanghai Business School, delivered a speech at the final presentation. He said: “I really like students’ design collections, and many students’ final works deeply touched me. If students’ learning journey in Shanghai Business School could be compared to a piece of symphony, undoubtedly this two-week workshop led by Prof. Jane Gottlier and Prof. Patrick Gottelier was the climax of the music.
Mr. Xiong also highly praised the teaching achievements of Prof Jane Gottelier, Prof Patrick Gottelier and the hard work of all fashion and apparel design teaching team and students. After that, the student representatives spoke one after another about how they thought of this master workshop from different perspectives.
This international workshop lasted for 10 days, and the final presentation exhibited 24 Qipao in different styles from 24 students. With the theme of “past meets future”, the aim of this workshop is to explore the possibility of modernizing traditional cutting techniques and new types materials and fabrics, but still being true to the origin. Students are requested to design a Qipao by combining traditions. This is another successful experiment of project-based teaching (learning by doing) led by Prof. Jane Gottelier and Prof.Patrick Gottelier from Detao Masters Academy.
Research inspiration and design element extraction
The project begins with a primary research on an exhibition “Kengo Kuma: a lab for materials” at Port Mix, the students got their inspiration from modern & futuristic architectures. During the tutorials, masters paid great attention to the originality of the students, from the extraction of design elements to design development, from sketches to final designs, from fabric selection to sewing and making, masters and their teaching team conducted one-to-one professional guidance and advice every day. At the same time, masters let students make decisions on their own, so that everyone can move forward by practice.
In this way, students constantly challenge themselves, continuously discover problems during the process of design, cutting patterns, sewing toiles, and making final garments, students solved the problem with the help of the masters, and really practised the concept of “learning from doing”.
At the end of the exhibition, Prof. Jane Gottelier and Patrick Gottelier awarded autographed certificates to all students who completed this workshop. The masters spoke highly of the students, "The creativity and hard work of the business school students are amazing!"
Finally, let us listen to how the students think of the workshop.
“I think my main benefit of this master workshop is to understand what is development of thinking, which means anything can be applied to fashion design, for example, the use of materials in architectural exhibitions. Secondly, I understand the importance of “learning by doing”. It’s actually not easy to make a garment which I thought was easy to make.”
“What impressed me most from this master workshop was to have courage to try. At the beginning, when I drew the design drawing, I felt that I could not make the dress and felt very confused. But both masters and Angelou encouraged me to try and do research. Finally I made the garment after a lot of trials and experiments. Although it was still different from what I imagined, it was a great improvement for me. I think I have achieved something I couldn’t do before.”
“This is the first time I have been making clothes for two weeks, it is a challenge (I feel tired). In the past, we all followed the teacher’s demonstration to learn first and then do it. However, this time, we learned and did it at the same time. It was easy to make mistakes by “learning by doing”, but gave more possibilities. We could ask the teacher in the process when we had anything we didn’t understand. I think this learning method is great.”
“What impressed me most can be expressed in three words: independence, choice and great atmosphere. During this international workshop, I felt the combination of tradition and modernity closely for the very first time. I really like the great atmosphere, like the teachers and my dear classmates.
