The National Day is approaching. Chinese students at Daystar are so proud to be Chinese that they leave the following comments on the website “Pay tribute to the national flag”, to express their wishes to their motherland.
“Happy birthday to our motherland! Hope China becomes stronger and stronger.”
“My country, happy birthday to you! Let’s create a better future together!”
“We hope our motherland can embrace a better future. We love you forever!”
These wishes may seem simple, but they come from students’ sincere love and admiration towards their country. And the wishes show that deep inside, students are profoundly attached to China and the traditional Chinese culture.
History lights up the way to the future. Daystar students are all aimed at travelling around the world for further study after graduation. So, for them, the first step to develop their “cultural values” is to feel a sense of belonging to their own country, and understand the culture of the countries they are living in.
So, to help them grow up into world citizens adept at both Chinese and English cultures and able to make a difference to this world, Daystar always pays attention to how students study and understand China and the traditional Chinese culture every day.
At Daystar, students not only learn the Chinese language and culture from vivid and profuse teaching activities, but also participate in traditional Chinese festivals and many other celebrations.
For example, during the Unit of Inquiry “How to Express Ourselves”, Grade 4 students learn to appreciate works of art in the Tang and Song dynasties, and try to understand the background of and the meaning behind these artworks.
On every traditional festival, teachers lead students to go through all sorts of traditional customs, to learn how they were originated and how people use them to celebrate.
And the school canteen would also introduce seasonal dishes based on the lunar calendar.
All these efforts help enrich Daystar students’ knowledge base, broaden their horizon, practice their skill of critical thinking, and improve their competitiveness, so that they have more personal insights on China’s relationship with the rest of the world. In this way, students will gain a deeper undertanding about their own country and take greater pride in being Chinese.
