On 7th May the 1st year students from WIDS· DeTao Studio Gottelier – BA Advanced Fashion Promotion Program (AFP) came to Shanghai for a fortnight’s field trip. The students were warmly greeted,by Professors Jane and Patrick, and Lesley de Freitas, whose practice in London is Couture Red Carpet and Bridal Wear, Fashion Design, Celebrity and Media Styling.
Lesley delivered the course including two lectures, in ‘Fashion Media Styling’ with focus on building fashion narratives using styling and appropriate media. The practical workshops delivered included a step-by-step guide for a styling project from start-to-finish, which culminated in Editorial and a Short Fashion Film. This gave them a real ‘hands on’ experience and tangible results.
They used the examples of methods in gathering new skills for research, together with brainstorming, styling workshops, decision-making processes and contemporary post-production effects in their own projects throughout.
Fashion and Media do not exist in a bubble, so importance was placed on taking the students to see some culture here in Shanghai. Visits were organised to the Power Station of Art, Xintiandi, TANK Shanghai, the Long Museum and the Chanel Privé Exhibition.
A good time was had by all, as proven in their videos ‘The Making of’, which showed a great deal of fun and generally lots of delicious food! For any parents out there that were worried if they were eating enough…. they looked very well fed!
The students worked in small groups and divided the tasks required to produce two fashion stories; one involving a collection of beautifully crafted and embellished Qipaos created by our talented 2nd year fashion students, together with some couture pieces from Lesley’s collection.
They were shot on locations scouted in the landscaped grounds of SIVA and the range of buildings on site. At each stage, their selections were discussed, narratives were brainstormed and all aspects were considered, including of course, hair and make up. The students were continually encouraged to develop and improve their efforts.
The 2nd shoot was on location in downtown Shanghai, at the Long Museum, along the riverside at Huangpo, the Tanks & surrounding areas. They styled looks which had been selected in advance, and signed out with the responsibility of safekeeping resting with one member of the team.
They used a combination of their own garments and accessories, pieces from the 4th year’s Graduation Final Major Projects, the 1st years’ Everyone Wears Jeans Project and a few garments from Lesley’s collection crept in too! We would like to take this opportunity to offer our gratitude to the generosity of our FAD students in loaning their garments for this project.
