Antes de venir a China, Sebastián Tosi de Argentina trabajaba en banca de inversión en España. Ahora, es dueño de la primera planta de procesamiento de carne vacuna y alimentos argentinos en China, intentando promover la carne vacuna argentina y otros tipos de comida saludable en el país.

Before coming to China, Sebastián Tosi from Argentina worked in investment banking in Spain. Now, he is the owner of the first Argentine beef and food processing plant in China, promoting Argentine beef and other healthy food in the country.

在来中国之前，阿根廷人Sebastián Tosi在西班牙的一家投行工作，而现在，他是中国第一家阿根廷牛肉和食品加工厂的老板，致力于在中国推广阿根廷牛肉及其他健康食品。

Tosi trabajaba en uno de los bancos más grandes del mundo, pero cuando llegó la crisis financiera a Europa, los bancos empezaron a recortar muchos puestos de trabajo y tuvo que buscar otras oportunidades. En aquel momento, su padre, que vivía en China desde el año 2000, le invitó a venir aquí.

Tosi worked for one of the largest banks in the world, but when the financial crisis hit Europe, banks started to cut many jobs and he had to look for other opportunities. At that time, his father, who had been living in China since 2000, invited him to come here.

“Me dijo, ‘Ven a conocer la economía real, no la economía financiera. ¿No? Es importante para tu formación que conozcas realmente la economía real,’” recordó el empresario de 40 años de edad.

“He told me, ‘Come and get to know the real economy, not the financial economy. It’s important for you to get to know the real economy,’” the 40-year-old entrepreneur recalled.

Así vino y llegó a Guanghzou en agosto de 2012 y continúa hasta hoy.  

So, he came and arrived in Guangzhou in August 2012 and has since been staying in China.

于是，在2012年8月Tosi来到了广州，并一直待到现在。

Al principio solo trabajaba en la empresa de comercio internacional de su padre. Sin embargo, un día en 2015, se les ocurrió la idea de promocionar productos argentinos dentro de China, porque sabían la potencialidad del mercado chino.

In the beginning, Tosi only worked in his father’s trading company. However, one day in 2015, they came up with the idea of promoting Argentine products in China, because they knew the Chinese market’s great potential.

“Siempre con la idea de que 1/5 de la población mundial vive dentro de China, pensamos, bueno, es un mercado objetivo interesante. Y decidimos empezar por la carne vacuna, porque si hay algo que caracteriza a los chinos es que les gusta mucho la comida, les gusta mucho cocinar, les gusta mucho intercambiar recetas, y les gusta mucho probar cosas nuevas,” dijo Tosi.

“Always bearing in mind that one-fifth of the world’s population lives inside China, we thought, well, that’s an interesting target market. And we decided to start with beef, because if there’s one thing that characterizes the Chinese, it’s that they really like food, they really like to cook, they really like to exchange recipes and they really like to try new things,” Tosi said.

“我们一直牢记着一个事实，就是世界上五分之一的人口都生活在中国，这是一个潜力巨大的目标市场。于是，我们决定从牛肉下手，因为如果说中国人有什么特点的话，那就是他们非常喜欢食物，非常喜欢烹饪，非常喜欢交流食谱，非常喜欢尝试新事物。”Tosi说。

Era el momento oportuno para ellos porque había muchos chinos viajando por el mundo, probando nuevas comidas, volviendo a China con nuevas ideas, y abriendo nuevos restaurantes más orientados a la comida occidental.

The timing was right for them because there were many Chinese people traveling around the world, trying new food, returning to China with new ideas and opening new Western-style restaurants.

Empezaron haciendo chorizos en casa para los amigos y después abrieron un pequeño local. “Importamos el primer contenedor de carne vacuna argentina. La cosa iba mejorando. Empezamos a abastecer a muchos restaurantes, caterings, a algunos hoteles y en 2019 decidimos abrir la fábrica,” contó Tosi, co-fundador de la fábrica El Gaucho.

They started making chorizos at home for friends and then opened a small workshop. “We imported the first container of Argentine beef. Things were getting better and better. We started supplying many restaurants, caterings, some hotels and in 2019, we decided to set up the factory,” said Tosi, co-founder of El Gaucho factory.

He established the factory together with his father and Frank Crestejo from Brazil. They import, process and distribute Argentine beef across China.

“Hacemos empanadas argentinas; procesamos carne vacuna argentina, carne cortada en cuadraditos, carne cortada en finas capas; hacemos hamburguesas; hacemos chorizos de diferentes clases, de cerdo, de carne, y de pollo; y hacemos jamón también,” dijo Tosi.

“We make Argentine empanadas; we process Argentine beef, cutting it into squares or thin layers; we make hamburgers; we make different kinds of chorizos – pork, beef and chicken; we also make ham,” Tosi said.

“我们做阿根廷饺子；加工阿根廷牛肉，将其切成小块状或薄片状；做阿根廷式汉堡；制作不同口味的阿根廷香肠，包括猪肉馅、牛肉馅和鸡肉馅；我们也做火腿。”Tosi介绍说。

El objetivo de la fábrica es ofrecer alimentos saludables para el mercado chino. “Compramos cerdo de Argentina y el pollo lo compramos en China. Tratamos de comprarlo en granjas orgánicas. El concepto de nuestra marca es comida natural, sin conservantes o aditivos, para que la puedan comer los niños y no tengan problemas. Nuestra estrategia no es competir por precio, sino por calidad,” explicó Tosi.

The factory aims to provide healthy food for the Chinese market. “We buy pork from Argentina and chicken is bought locally in China. We try to buy chicken from organic farms. Our brand’s concept is natural food, without preservatives or additives, so children will have no problem eating it. Our strategy is not to compete on price, but on quality,” Tosi explained.

Según Tosi, la carne vacuna argentina es más saludable porque tiene poca grasa. “Como el animal sí se mueve porque se mueve para poder comer el pasto, la grasa que genera es una grasa rica en muchos nutrientes, como por ejemplo omega 3 y 6. Es el tipo de grasa que cualquier persona necesita consumir todos los días.”

According to Tosi, Argentine beef is healthier because it has less fat. “As the cow moves more to eat grass, its fat is rich in many nutrients like Omega 3 and 6. It’s the good kind of fat people need to consume every day.”

Tosi介绍说，阿根廷牛肉因为脂肪较少，比较健康。“因为牛为了吃草在牧场上不停走动，它的脂肪营养丰富，包含Omega-3和Omega-6等脂肪酸，这对人体健康十分有益，我们每天都需要摄入。”

Al principio, la carne vacuna argentina no era famosa en China, pero poco a poco fue ganando popularidad porque más y más gente empieza a conocer su valor gracias a sus esfuerzos.

Initially, Argentine beef was not famous in China, but it gradually became popular as more and more people became aware of its value through Tosi and his team’s efforts.

一开始，阿根廷牛肉在中国不是很有名，但渐渐地，通过他们的努力，越来越多中国人认识到阿根廷牛肉的营养价值，阿根廷牛肉也因此更加受欢迎。

“Es un proceso que lleva tiempo, pero en el momento en el que el público chino realmente entienda las ventajas de la carne más saludable, nosotros pretendemos que nuestra marca ya esté instalada en el mercado. Entonces nos reconozcan como promotores de la carne argentina,” dijo Tosi.

“It’s a process that takes time, but when Chinese people really understand the advantages of healthier meat, we hope that our brand will be well-recognized in the market. Then we will be recognized as promoters of Argentine beef,” Tosi said.

“这是一个过程，需要时间，但当中国人真正了解到吃健康肉类的重要性时，我们希望到那个时候我们的品牌会在中国市场得到广泛认可。希望大家知道我们为推广根廷牛肉所做的努力。”Tosi说道。

Eligieron Guangzhou para establecer la fábrica por varios motivos. Antes de todo, porque el padre de Tosi, que trabajaba con cueros, ya vivía allí.

Tosi and his partners chose Guangzhou to establish their factory for several reasons. First of all, Tosi’s father, who worked in the leather business, already lived there.

“El mercado de cuero en Guangzhou era muy famoso. La ciudad era muy grande. Tenía mucha vida. Para el tiempo en el que yo llegué, era muy cosmopolita. Había muchos extranjeros, había muchas cosas para hacer y nos pareció un buen punto de partida. Y de ahí en adelante tuvimos la posibilidad de elegir otra ciudad, pero preferimos quedarnos en Guangzhou,” dijo Tosi.

“Guangzhou’s leather market was very famous. The city was big and full of life. When I arrived, Guangzhou was very cosmopolitan and there were many foreigners, as well as things to do. So, that seemed like a good starting point. From then on, we had opportunities to choose another city, but we preferred to stay in Guangzhou,” Tosi said.

“广州的皮革市场非常有名。这座城市很大，充满了活力。当我到达时，广州就已经是一座非常国际化的城市，这里有很多外国人，有很多事情可以做。所以我们觉得可以选择广州作为我们事业的起点。后来，我们有机会选择其他城市，但我们还是选择留在广州。”Tosi说。

Para ellos, la ventaja principal de Guangzhou es que está mejor conectada con otras partes de China. “Estamos cerca de Hong Kong y de todo el sur de Asia. Tenemos buena conectividad con el resto de la parte continental de China, principalmente con Xiamen, Shanghai, Chengdu, estas zonas de influencia donde nosotros más vendemos,” contó Tosi.

For them, Guangzhou’s main advantage is that it’s well-connected to other parts of China. “We are close to Hong Kong and all of South Asia. We also have good connectivity with the rest of the Chinese mainland, mainly with Xiamen, Shanghai and Chengdu – areas of influence where we sell the most,” Tosi said.

对他们来说，广州的主要优势在于它跟中国其他地区高度联通。“我们离香港和整个南亚都很近，与中国大陆其他地区也密切联通，特别是厦门、上海和成都，这些是我们销售量最大的地区。”Tosi说。

A nivel logístico también les conviene mantenerse en el sur. “A nivel de costo, era mejor vivir en Guangzhou que en Shanghai, aunque el mercado de Shanghai está mejor desarrollado para lo que hacemos,” dijo.

Logistically, it’s also better for them to stay in the south. “In terms of costs, it was better to live in Guangzhou than Shanghai, although the Shanghai market is better developed for what we do,” he said.

从物流层面上来看，留在南方对他们来说也比较合适。“从成本上来讲，住在广州也比住在上海合适，虽然我们所做的行业，上海那边的市场更加发达。”Tosi说道。

Según Tosi, Guangzhou brinda un buen entorno empresarial. “La verdad es que fue un desafío interesante, por la complejidad del mismo, pero por suerte el gobierno nos ha ayudado bastante para conseguir las licencias. Nosotros estamos muy contentos porque si bien la parte comercial a veces tiene sus problemas porque hay más competencia, menos competencia, sube el consumo, baja el consumo ... En lo que respecta al marco que nos brinda el gobierno para poder desarrollar el negocio, estamos muy contentos. Nos han dado todas las herramientas para poder desarrollar el negocio bien,” contó.

According to Tosi, Guangzhou provides a good business environment. “The truth is that it (setting up the factory) was an interesting challenge because of its complexity, but luckily, the government has helped us a lot to get the licenses. We are very happy because although sometimes we encounter some problems commercially, with more competition or less competition, growing consumption or decreasing consumption ... Regarding the framework provided by the government to develop business, we are very content. They have given us all the tools to develop our business,” he said.

Cuando empezaron en 2015, sus principales clientes eran los extranjeros, pero a partir de 2019 cuando montaron la fábrica, el objetivo era el público local.

When they started the Argentine food business in 2015, their main customers were foreigners; but since 2019, when they set up the factory, their target customers have been the local Chinese.

2015年他们的阿根廷食品业务刚开始的时候，主要客源都是外籍人士，但自从2019年建立工厂以来，他们的目标客户就是本地的中国人。

“Los extranjeros nos ayudaron a llegar hasta acá, pero ahora la idea era poder proveerle al mercado chino un producto de calidad adaptado al gusto local. Y eso nos llevó a contratar un chef argentino que nos dio su punto de vista: cómo mejorar algunos sabores, algunas combinaciones de alimentos para alcanzar ese nivel que estábamos buscando para atraer al público local,” dijo Tosi.

“Foreigners helped us get here, but now, the idea is to provide the Chinese market with a quality product catering to the local taste. So, we hired an Argentine chef who gave us his point of view on improving some flavors and food combinations to realize our goal to attract the locals,” Tosi said.

“外籍人士帮助我们走到了这里，但现在，我们的目标就是服务中国市场，提供符合当地口味的高质量产品。所以，我们聘请了一位阿根廷厨师，他提出一些食品口味和食物搭配的建议，以帮助我们达到吸引本地消费者的目标。”Tosi说道。

Aunque siguen teniendo muchos clientes extranjeros, la proporción ha cambiado a medida que sus productos se han hecho más populares entre los chinos. “Hoy tenemos 40% de chinos y 60% de extranjeros. Antes, eran 90% extranjeros. Y la idea es que de acá a finales de 2023 sean 90% chinos,” dijo Tosi.

Although they still have a lot of foreign customers, the proportion has changed as their products have become more popular among the Chinese. “Today among our customers, 40% are Chinese and 60% are foreigners. Before, 90% were foreigners. Our goal is that 90% of our customers will be Chinese by the end of 2023,” Tosi said.

虽然目前他们仍然有很多外籍客户，但随着他们的产品在中国人中越来越受欢迎，中外消费者的比例已经发生了变化。“现在，我们的客户中有40%是中国人，60%是外国人；以前则有90%是外国人。我们的目标是在2023年底有90%的客户是中国人。”Tosi说道。

Hasta la fecha, su principal mercado es la Gran Área de la Bahía de Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao, principalmente Shenzhen y Guangzhou, y Xiamen.

To date, their main market is the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, mainly Shenzhen and Guangzhou, as well as Xiamen.

“Ahora, de a poco empezamos a vender mucho en Shanghai. Y tenemos algún punto de venta en Beijing. Tenemos un local a la calle en Jingzhou en la provincia de Hubei. Bueno, ahora por el tema del COVID, está un poco parado. Pero sí, digamos que el 80% de lo que vendemos es en el sur y el resto lo distribuimos un poco en el centro y norte de China,” dijo Tosi.

“Gradually we are starting to sell a lot in Shanghai. And we have some outlets in Beijing. We have a store in Jingzhou in Hubei Province. Well, because of COVID, business is a little bit at a standstill. But yes, around 80% of what we sell is in the south and we distribute the rest in central and northern China,” Tosi said.

“渐渐地，我们在上海也销售了很多产品，我们在北京也有一些销售点。在湖北荆州，我们开了一家实体店，但因为疫情，目前有点停滞。我们大约80%的产品是在南方销售的，剩余部分则销往华中和华北地区。”Tosi说。

Para el futuro, ellos querían llegar a un volumen de venta más alta y conseguir distribuidores en el centro y norte de China para su marca.

In the future, they hope to reach higher sales volume and get distributors in central and northern China for their brand.

未来，他们希望销售量能创新高，并在华中和华北地区拥有自己的品牌经销商。

En 2012 y 2013, cuando Tosi recién llegó a China, vivir y trabajar en el país era una aventura para él. “Era no poder hablar el idioma, no conocer a la gente, no conocer nada. Y ya después de 10 años, uno siente el pulso del mercado y ya está más acostumbrado a charlar con la gente,” contó Tosi.

In 2012 and 2013, when Tosi first came to China, living and working in the country was an adventure for him. “It was about being unable to speak the language, not knowing the people, and not knowing anything. But after 10 years, you can feel the pulse of the market and you’re more used to chatting with the locals,” he said.

在2012年和2013年Tosi刚来中国的时候，在这里生活工作对Tosi来说像是一次冒险。“因为我不会这里的语言，不认识别的人，什么都不知道。但在这里生活了10年后，我已经可以感受到市场的律动，也更习惯与当地人交流。”他说。

Ya lleva 10 años en China. Para Tosi, el país se ha convertido en su segundo hogar. “La verdad es que cada vez que tomo el avión de vuelta a China es como decir bueno, estoy volviendo a casa. Ya no es como antes, ahora es más relajado, más tranquilo. China fue muy buena conmigo desde el día que llegué y por eso sigo acá después de 10 años,” afirmó.

Tosi has been living in China for 10 years and the country has become his second home. “The truth is that every time I take the plane back to China, I feel like coming back home. It’s not like before. Now I feel more relaxed, more peaceful. China has been very good to me since the day I set foot on it and that’s why I’m still here after 10 years,” he said.

到目前为止，Tosi已经在中国生活了10年。对他来说，这个国家已经成为他的第二个家。“现在我每次坐飞机回中国时，都感觉像回到了家，这和以前不一样了，现在我感到更放松，更平静。从我踏上中国的那一天起，中国就对我非常好，这就是为什么十年后我还在这里。”他说。

Hablando sobre lo que ha cambiado en China, Tosi dijo que es difícil poner un punto de inicio y un punto final para cada ciclo, porque el país está constantemente creciendo.

When talking about the changes in China, Tosi said it's hard to put a starting and ending point for each cycle because the country is constantly evolving.

“En mi país, sería más fácil, pero en China está constantemente creciendo, constantemente. Por ejemplo, en Argentina nosotros tenemos cinco líneas de metro, de las cuales tres las tenemos desde el año 1900. Del año 1900 a 2020 sumamos solamente dos líneas de metro en Buenos Aires. En Guangzhou, en dos años hay como cinco líneas nuevas de metro. La conectividad de Guangzhou es espectacular,” explicó. 

“In my country, it would be easier to talk about this, but in China it is constantly growing, constantly. For example, in Argentina we have five Metro lines, three of which we have had since 1900. From 1900 to 2020, we added only two more Metro lines in Buenos Aires. However, in Guangzhou, about five new Metro lines have been built over the past two years. The connectivity of Guangzhou is spectacular,” he explained.

“在我的国家，谈论周期可能会比较容易，但中国一直不断在发展，从未停止。例如，在阿根廷，我们有五条地铁线，其中三条从1900年就有了。从1900年到2020年，布宜诺斯艾利斯只新增了两条地铁线。而广州在过去的两年里，大约新建了五条新的地铁线，广州的交通网络四通八达。”他解释说。

En cambios geográficos, lo que le impresiona mucho es que los lugares de la ciudad cambian todo el tiempo. “Uno levanta la cabeza y hay grúas trabajando todo el tiempo. Hay parques nuevos, lugares nuevos, zonas desarrollándose, zonas verdes, zonas cerca de los ríos que antes no se usaban y ahora se empiezan a utilizar, y espacios verdes donde uno puede ver a la gente haciendo ejercicio que antes no se veía,” enumeró entusiasmado.

In terms of geographic changes, what impresses him a lot is that the places in the city change all the time. “You look up and there are cranes working all the time. There are new parks, new places, areas being developed, green areas, areas near rivers that were not used before and now are starting to be used, and green spaces where you can see people exercising that you didn’t see before,” he listed the changes enthusiastically.

在城市面貌方面，让他印象深刻的是城市一直在变化。“你只要抬头，就会看到一直有起重机在工作。这里有新的公园、新的地方、正在开发的地方、很多绿地，一些靠近河流的区域以前没有开发，现在也开始投入使用了，你现在也可以看到有人在一些绿地锻炼，这在以前是没有的。”他热情地列举道。

No solo la ciudad está cambiando, la gente también. Tosi dijo que ahora hay mucha más gente haciendo deporte y disfrutando de estar al aire libre. También se ven más eventos culturales. “Bueno, ahora con la pandemia se paró un poquito, pero yo desde que llegué en 2012 hasta hoy he visto que la ciudad fue continuamente evolucionando sin parar.”

Not only the city is changing, but the people are also changing too. Tosi said a lot more people are doing sports and enjoying outdoor nowadays. There are also more cultural events. “Now with the pandemic, it stopped a little bit, but since I arrived in 2012, I have seen that the city has been continuously evolving.”

不仅城市在变化，城市里的人们也在变化。Tosi说现在越来越多的人做运动，享受户外活动，城市里也举办更多的文化活动。“现在因为疫情，稍微消停了一些，但自从我2012年来到这里，我亲眼见证了这座城市一直不停地发展变化。”

“Entonces es difícil poder decir bueno, este cambio o tal cambio, porque siempre hay cambio, siempre, todos los días, todos los meses, todos los años. Y eso es lo que hace a China, China!” concluyó.
