Change to marriage process in China

We have recently been made aware that from the 29 March 2019 Civil Affairs Offices across China ceased marrying couples where both parties where not Chinese. If you are planning to marry an opposite sex partner, who is not Chinese, this will affect you.

If you have already booked a marriage service please check with the Civil Affairs Office where you booked your marriage to seek clarity.

The Embassy and our Consulates in China are currently checking with the Chinese authorities and reviewing our guidance on marriage in China. We will update our Marriage in China pages and Marriage in China guidance on gov.uk shortly.
