1924年12月4日，约翰•波特曼二世出生于南卡罗来纳州瓦尔哈拉市。 他是美国建筑师兼房地产开发商，以将多层中庭推广于酒店和办公楼建筑而闻名于世。对他所居住的乔治亚州亚特兰大的城市景观，波特曼先生的影响尤为巨大。自1970年代起，桃树中心综合体即已成为市中心商业和旅游业的核心。John Calvin Portman, Jr. was born December 4, 1924 in Walhalla, South Carolina. He is an American architect and real estate developer widely known for popularizing hotels and office buildings with multi-storied interior atria. Portman also had a particularly large impact on the cityscape of his hometown of Atlanta, Georgia, with the Peachtree Center complex serving as downtown's business and tourism anchor from the 1970s onward.

上海商城起源于邓小平1979年历史性访美期间。当时他来到美国乔治亚洲亚特兰大市，参观了位于市中心的一个多功能开发项目的雏形，名为桃树中心。它独特地以人为本，融办公楼、酒店、商铺、展览和娱乐设施于一体。在赞赏这个项目的建筑师杰克•波特曼二世的同时，邓小平表示希望看到类似的开发项目在中国实施。而杰克•波特曼二世的儿子杰克•波特曼三世当时已是从美国到中国寻求商机的先驱者之一。不久后，杰克•波特曼三世再次来到中国，会见政府官员，筹划后来著称于世的上海商城项目。正式奠基仪式于1986年5月举行。The story of Shanghai Centre begins in Atlanta, Georgia during Deng Xiao Ping' s historic 1979 visit to the United States. On that visit, the Chairman visited a prototype mixed-use development in the heart of downtown Atlanta called Peachtree Center Project that combined office, hotel, retail, exhibition space and entertainment with a distinctly people-oriented design. As Deng complimented the man behind the project, architect John C. Portman II, he also expressed his wish to see a similar development realized in China. His son, John C. Portman III, had already been one of the first American pioneers to travel to China in search of potential business opportunities. Before long, he was back in China once again, meeting with government officials to set the stage for what would become the renowned Shanghai Centre. The official groundbreaking ceremony took place in May of 1986.
