Most of the vendors at Liangma International Flower Market have been in the business for more than 20 years and are more than comfortable dealing with the requirements of international customers — most also speak a little English. For example, one vendor who sells potted plants told us that over the past 10 years or so the number of people asking for plants that can help improve indoor air quality has increased significantly (examples include Peace Lilies, Devil’s Ivy, and Mother-in-Law’s Tongue) and she now keeps a handy list in both Chinese and English. At most vendors, small potted plants start from RMB 20-30, making for an affordable way to add a little healthy greenery to your home. 

Of the more than 20 vendors in the market, most sell potted plants or cut flowers but there are also a number of vendors selling everything from Chinese-style trinkets to candles to custom-made curtains. At this time of year, the stalls are full of holiday decorations, including baubles, lights, and cute tchotchkes  — good if you prefer not to waste time scrolling through Taobao. At Ms. Ding’s artificial flower store customers are greeted by a phalanx of stylish pre-decorated Christmas trees. You can buy the trees as they are or if you have more specific requirements, the staff can also help you design your own, whether you want a classic red and green color scheme or something a little more modern. 

The store’s eponymous owner, who hails from Taiwan, is also an expert in arranging artificial flowers and sells a wide range of colorful, everlasting blooms, among the best quality available in Beijing. Nevertheless, if you’re in the market for fresh flowers then you won’t be disappointed, either. Rows and rows of bright blooms line the aisles so you’re bound to be able to find whatever you’re looking for. The vendors tell us that the blooms are sourced from major flower-producing regions such as Kunming (home to one of the biggest wholesale flower markets in Asia) and the Netherlands, among others. 

With such a wide range of products on offer in a convenient location, Liangma Flower Market is bound to be a hit with local and international shoppers alike.
