In our previous article, we mentioned all the amazing places that subway line S5 goes, including all the beautiful suburban areas outside downtown Beijing. Having said that, we still don’t think we’ve done enough justice to other scenic spots along this magical route. That's why we’ve come up with part two, offering even more places to explore this holiday break.
If hitting up the trails along the Great
Wall is your style, then you've got to visit Mutianyu Great Wall (慕田峪长城 mùtiányù chángchéng)! As a
Beijinger, Mutianyu is actually my favorite section of the wall, as
there are fewer tourists and plenty more nature. When you arrive at the
foot of the mountain, there is a free shuttle that takes you directly to
the ticketing area. There will also be folks who try to sell you on the
cable car instead of climbing up the hill on your own, but if you're an
intrepid explorer and not averse to a bit of exercise, feel free to
ignore these services and hike on up to the top.
Qinglong Gorge (青龙峡 qīnglóng xiá) is a great place to hike, no matter your
hiking experience. What's more, there are tons of sports activities
including bungee jumping, paddle boarding, and speedboats. Much like
Mutianyu, I recommend you climb to the top and then take the cable car
down, and feast on panoramic views of the Qinglong Gorge's grandeur.
For something a bit more romantic, venture to the Beijing Oriental Provence Lavender Manor (蓝调薰衣草庄园 lándiào xūnyīcǎo zhuāngyuán) and immerse yourself in a sea of fragrant lavender blossoms.
If you fancy yourself a history buff, then you definitely don't want to pass the Ming Tombs (十三陵 shísān líng) up! Take a walk along the historic and sacred trail, which leads to the iconic burial site of the Ming emperors.
