International Research Initiative of DFI Working Group Held Midterm Review Workshop

From June 22nd to 25th, 2020, members of the International Research Initiative of DFI Working Groups engaged in an online mid-term review workshop. The workshop, hosted by Institute of New Structural Economics at Peking University (INSE) at Peking University, sponsored by Agence française de développement (AFD), Ford Foundation and International Development Finance Club (IDFC), and supported by the Global Development Policy Center at Boston University, brought together over 40 researchers and practitioners from China and abroad to review the Initiative’s ongoing DFI research projects.

The mid-term review workshop covered a variety of research topics, including public development banks and the alignment with 2030 Agenda, the appropriate financial regulatory framework of national development banks, the business model and government of DFIs, and the inclusion of DFIs in the global development finance architecture . Authors of 13 working papers reported their work-in-progress and engaged in in-depth discussion with peer reviewers.

The International Research Initiative of DFI Working Groups also held a meeting on June 24th in which Mr. Rémy Rioux, President of the IDFC and CEO of AFD, shared his ambition and prospects for the upcoming Finance in Common Summit – the first summit where all public development banks are invited – this November. Co-chairs of the working groups were then invited to share key takeaways from the research projects.

Launched in 2020 as a joint initiative of INSE, AFD and the research academy of China Development Bank (CDB), the International Research Initiative of DFI Working Groups is a network of thematically-focused open working groups on DFIs. The initiative will allow the fulfillment of the conference statement in the international conference titled “Realizing the Full Potential of National Development Banks: Supporting the Sustainable Development Goals and Structural Transformation” in May 2019. With the support of wide-ranging stakeholders, the INSE aims to work together with partner institutions to foster an international research initiative on DFIs by bringing leading scholars, experts, policy makers and practitioners together to foster academically rigorous research, in an effort to make concrete policy recommendations to unleash the full potential of DFIs in promoting economic structural transformation and the Sustainable Development Goals.
