Many dairy processing plants across Wisconsin have more product than they can handle and that’s forced farmers to begin dumping their milk down the drain.

That’s the case at Golden E Dairy near West Bend. Farmer Ryan Elbe told WISN-TV they are dumping about 30,000 gallons (113,562 litres) a day.

Emily Barge, a spokeswoman for the Center for Dairy Excellence, said it is a chaotic time for dairy farmers.

Barge said at the start of the COVID-19 crisis, milk was hard to find in grocery stores because of panic-buying.

"Everything here is the same, it's going to remain going the same. Under the direction of Gov. Tony Evers, the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection has urged the U.S. Department of Agriculture to step in and support the dairy industry during this time.
