གྲིབ་གཟུགས་ཁྲོད་ཀྱི་མི་ཚེ། Life in the Shadow By Lhashamgyal

ཉི་ཐིག་ཅིག་ཡར་སྔོན་དང་མཚུངས་པར་བག་ཕེབས་པའི་ངང་འཇམ་ཅག་གེར་སྒེའུ་ཁུང་གི་ཤེལ་སྒོ་བརྟོལ་ནས་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱི་མདུན་ཅོག་ལ་འཕྲོས་ཡོང་། 

A shaft of sunlight calmly and quietly shone through the window and fell on Tashi’s desk.    

བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་ག་ལེར་དབྱིན་ཡིག་གི་ཚིག་མཛོད་མཐུག་པོ་དེའི་ཁ་བསུམས་ཤིང་། མཛུབ་བར་ལ་བཙིར་བའི་ལྕགས་སྨྱུག་དེ་ལོགས་སུ་བཞག མཐའ་མར་གདོང་ལ་བཟར་པའི་ཤེལ་མིག་དེ་ཡར་ལ་ཐེངས་ཤིག་དེད་རྗེས། གཞི་ནས་ལག་པ་གཉིས་ག་ལེར་ཉི་ཐིག་གི་ཁྲོད་དུ་བསྲིངས། དེ་མ་ཐག་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱི་ཅོག་ཙེ་རུ་ལག་པའི་གྲིབ་གཟུགས་འཕོས་བྱུང་། དེ་ནས་ཁོས་མཛུབ་མོ་རེས་མོས་སུ་བརྐྱངས་ཏེ་བཟོ་ལྟ་སྣ་ཚོགས་བཏོད་ཅིང་། ཅོག་ཙེ་རུའང་དེ་དང་བསྟུན་ནས་གྲིབ་གཟུགས་ཀྱི་བཟོ་ལྟ་སྣ་ཚོགས་ཤིག་བབས་བྱུང་། དེ་ན་མཆེ་བ་གཙིགས་པའི་ཁྱི་དང་། སྐད་གསང་སྒྲོག་པའི་བྱ་ཕོ། ད་དུང་ཕག་པ། བ་ལང་། ལུག རྟ་སོགས་སེམས་ཅན་སྣ་མང་འགུལ་བཞིན་འདུག མཚམས་ཤིག་ལ། ཅོག་ཙེ་རུ་ནུ་མ་རྒྱས་ཤིང་འཕོངས་ཚོས་འབུར་པའི་བུ་མོ་ཞིག་གི་གྲིབ་གཟུགས་ཀྱང་པྲ་ཆལ་གྱིས་བབས་བྱུང་།

Tashi gently closed his thick English dictionary and put away the pen, adjusting his glasses that had slipped down on his nose, he stretched his hands towards the ray of sunlight. The shadow of his hands immediately reflected on the desk. He made various shadow puppets by moving his fingers one after another: a dog with pointy teeth, a crowing rooster, and moving animals; a pig, a cow, and a sheep.  After a while the shadow of a woman with curves reflected on the desk in jest.

བཀྲ་ཤིས་རྩེད་མོ་དེ་ལ་ཕལ་ཆེར་ཤིན་ཏུ་མཁས་པ་འདྲ། ཁོ་ཉི་ཐིག་གི་རྩེད་མོ་དེར་གཡེང་དུས་ཅོག་ཙེའི་ངོས་ཀྱི་སེམས་ཅན་དེ་ཚང་མ་གྲིབ་བརྙན་ཙམ་ཡིན་པ་རྨང་ནས་བརྗེད་ཡོད་ལས་ཆེ། ཁོས་ངག་ལས་སེམས་ཅན་དེ་དག་སྐད་སྒྲ་སྒྲོག་ཅིང་། ངང་ཚུལ་དེ་ལ་ལོ་གསུམ་བཞི་ཅན་གྱི་བྱིས་པའི་བཟོ་ལཞིག་འདུག 

Tashi was skillful in making shadow puppets. He was so into making shadow puppets that he completely forgot they were just shadows; he impersonated them with their sounds, and his behavior was just like that of a child of three or four years. 

ད་ལྟ། ཉི་ཐིག་ཕར་ལ་བཟུར་འདུག བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་ཀྱང་རྩེད་མོ་དེ་རྩེ་མཚམས་བཞག ཁོ་འདུག་སྟེགས་སུ་ཀྲོང་ངེར་ཅི་ཞིག་ལ་ཧད་ནས་བསྡད། ཁང་མིག་ཏུ་ཆུ་ཚོད་འཁོར་ལོ་འཁོར་བའི་ཐག་སྒྲ་ལས་ཅི་ཡང་ཐོས་རྒྱུ་མི་འདུག ཕར་ལ་བཟུར་པའི་ཉི་ཐིག་གི་ལྷག་མ་ཞིག་ཐད་ཀར་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱི་གདོང་གི་ཕྱེད་ཀར་ཕོག་ནས་ཁོའི་གདོང་པ་དེ་གདགས་སྲིབ་ཀྱི་ངོས་གཉིས་སུ་དབྱེ། རྣམ་པ་དེ་ནི་བསམ་བློ་པ་ཆེན་པོ་ཞིག་མཐའ་ཀླས་པའི་བསམ་གཞིག་གི་ཀློང་དུ་ཞུགས་པའི་ཉམས་དང་མཚུངས། 

When the sunlight faded away, Tashi stopped making shadow puppets. He sat in his chair, staring into blankness. In his small room only the sound of clock ticking could be heard. A remaining shaft of sunlight shone straight onto his face, dividing it into bright and dark, making him appear like a great thinker who had fallen deep in thought. 

བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱི་མཐོང་སྣེ་དེད་ན། སྒེའུ་ཁུང་ལས་ནམ་མཁའ་ཕྱེད་ཙམ་མཐོང་ཐུབ། ད་དུང་ལྕགས་དྲ་ཞིག་ཀྱང་མཐོང་ཐུབ། མ་གཞིར་ཁོ་སྡོད་ས་ནི་ཐོག་ཁང་ཆེན་མོ་ཞིག་གི་ས་འོག་གི་ཁང་བ་ཞིག་ཡིན་ལ། ཁང་བའི་ཕྱེད་ཙམ་ས་ཁར་བུད་ཡོད་པ་ཙམ་རེད། གལ་ཏེ། ཁོའི་མགོ་ཐོག་གི་ཐོག་ཁང་ཆེན་མོ་དེའི་རྩེ་རུ་འགོས་ཚེ། མཐའ་མི་མངོན་པའི་གྲོང་ཁྱེར་ཆེན་པོ་ཞིག་མཐོང་ལམ་དུ་རྔམ་བརྗིད་ཀྱིས་ཆགས་ཡོད། དེ་ནས་མགོ་བོ་བཏེགས་ཏེ་བར་སྣང་ལ་བལྟས་ཚེ་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ལ་རྣམ་ཀུན་ཉི་ཐིག་གི་བགོ་སྐལ་འགྲེམ་པའི་ཉི་མ་དེའང་ཉམ་ཆུང་གིས་འོད་མག་མོག་ཅིག་བཀྱེས་ཏེ་འགྲོ་བཞིན་འདུག 

Gazing through the window, Tashi could see a strip of sky and a metal fence. He was living in the semi-basement of a huge building, and if he were to go up to the roof, he would be able to see the magnificent and borderless city, and if he were to then look up, he would be able to see the whole sun, which had emitted the blurry shafts of sunlight, moving slowly across the sky.

གང་ལྟར་ཀྱང་། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱི་སེམས་ནང་དུ་མགོ་ཐོག་གི་ཉི་མ་ལ་བཀའ་དྲིན་ཡང་ཡང་ཞུ་བཞིན་ཡོད། ཉིན་རེའི་ཞོགས་པའི་སྐབས་སུ། གནམ་གཤིས་དང་མཁའ་དབུགས་ཀྱི་གནང་བ་རེ་འཐོབ་པ་ཡིན་ཚེ། མགོ་ཐོག་གི་ཉི་མས་ཐོག་ཁང་དག་གི་འཚང་ཁའི་བར་གསེང་ཞིག་ནས་རྒྱུ་མཚན་ཅི་ཡང་མེད་པར་ཉི་ཐིག་ཕྲ་མོ་ཞིག་ས་འོག་གི་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ལ་བགོ་སྐལ་དུ་སྟེར་བཞིན་ཡོད། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ལ་མཚོན་ན། ཉི་ཐིག་དེ་ནི་ཉིན་གཅིག་གི་སེམས་ཁམས་ཀྱི་རྟགས་མཚན་ཞིག་ད་གྲབ་ཡོད། གལ་ཏེ་ཞོགས་པར་ཉི་ཐིག་དེ་མཐོང་རྒྱུ་མ་བྱུང་ཚེ། ཉོབ་མདངས་དང་ནང་དོན་མེད་པའི་ཉིན་གཅིག་གི་དུས་ཚོད་དེ་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཐོག་ཁང་དེའི་ས་འོག་གི་ཁང་བའི་ཕྱི་ལ་བུད་པའི་དུས་དེ་ནས་བཟུང་མགོ་བརྩམས་པ་རེད། དེ་དུས། ཏག་ཏག་ལ་གྲོང་ཁྱེར་དེའི་བར་སྣང་སྤྲིན་གྱིས་གཡོགས་ཡོད་པ་མིན་ན་མཁའ་དབུགས་ཁྲོད་རྫབ་རྫོབ་ཡོངས་སུ་འདྲེས་པའི་ཁུག་སྣ་འཐིབས་ཡོད་པ་ངེས་གཏན་རེད། །

Tashi was immensely grateful for the sun above his head. Every morning, when the air temperature and atmospheric pressure were matched, sunlight would shine through the gap of high buildings and into his semi-basement room for any reason whatsoever. Over time, the sunlight had come to determine his daily mood. If he could not see sunlight in the morning, a boring and meaningless day would start right after he stepped out of the building. On these occasions, the city would be cloudy or shrouded with dense fog.

ཐོག་ཁང་ཕྱི་རོལ་ཏུ། རྐང་འཁོར་དང་རླངས་འཁོར་ཆུང་ངུ་མང་བོ་གཡས་གཡོན་དུ་བསྒྲིགས་ཡོད་པའི་སྲང་ལམ་དོག་མོ་ཞིག་བརྒྱུད་ནས་སོང་ཚེ། བགྲོད་ལམ་སྔོ་ཚོད་ཚོང་ར་ཞིག་ཏུ་འཐེན་ཡོད་ཅིང་། འ་འུར་དང་འདུ་འཛི་དེ་བརྒལ་ཚར་ཏེ་གཞི་ནས་ཁོད་ཡངས་པའི་གཞུང་ལམ་ཆེན་པོ་ཞིག་ཏུ་སླེབས། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་ཀོ་ཁུག་ནག་པོ་ཞིག་མཆན་ལ་བཙིར་ཏེ་སྤྱི་སྤྱོད་རླངས་འཁོར་ཨང34པའི་འབབ་ཚིགས་མིང་བྱང་ཡོད་སར་ལངས་ནས་བསྡད། དེ་ན་གྲོང་ཁྱེར་དེའི་ལས་སྒྲུབ་པ་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་ཧ་ཅང་བྲེལ་བ་ཆེ་མདོག་གིས་རླངས་འཁོར་ལ་སྒུག་བཞིན་འདུག བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱང་ལས་སྒྲུབ་པ་ཞིག་ཡིན། ཁོར་ཡང་བྲེལ་བ་ཆེ། ཁོས་ཀྱང་སྤྱི་སྤྱོད་རླངས་འཁོར་ཨང34པ་ལ་སྒུག་བཞིན་ཡོད། །

Outside the building, bicycles and compact cars were parked on both sides of a narrow road, which led to a vegetable market. Beyond that noisy, crowded vegetable market of people hustling and bustling, was the wide open main road.  Tashi carried a black leather bag under his arm and stood at the bus number 34 stop sign. There were many very busy looking employees waiting for the public buses. Busy employees just like him.

དེ་ནི་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ལོ་ན་ཆུང་བའི་དུས་རེད། དེ་དུས་ཀྱི་ངང་ཚུལ་མང་བོ་ཞིག་ད་ལྟ་ཕྱིར་དྲན་དུས། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ལ་སྐྱེ་བ་སྔོན་མའི་སྔོན་མ་ཞིག་གི་རང་ཉིད་དྲན་པའི་ཉམས་སྣང་བྱུང་། དེ་དུས་ཁོ་གོ་ལ་འདིའི་ཆེས་མཐོ་ས་སྟེ་ཉི་མ་དང་བར་ཐག་ཆེས་ཉེ་སའི་མཐོ་སྒང་དེའི་ལྟེབས་ཁུགས་ཤིག་ཏུ་བདེ་ལེགས་དང་སྟབས་བདེའི་ངང་འཚར་ལོངས་འབྱུང་བཞིན་པའི་སྒང་རེད། དེ་དུས་ཁོར་རྩེད་ཆས་མང་བོ་མེད། འོན་ཀྱང་ཉི་འོད་རྫོགས་མེད་ཅིག་ཡོད། རིམ་གྱིས་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཞི་འོད་ལ་རྩེད་མོ་རྩེ་བར་གོམས་ཤིང་། དེ་ཡང་ཐོག་མར་ཉི་འོད་ཁྲོད་རང་གི་ལུས་པོའི་ཡན་ལག་དང་ཉིང་ལག་གི་གྲིབ་གཟུགས་སྣ་ཚོགས་ཕབ་ནས་གད་མོ་ཡང་ཡང་དགོད། དུས་ཚོད་རིང་དུ་ཕྱིན་པ་དང་བསྟུན་ནས་ཁོས་རང་གི་ཡན་ལག་དང་ཉིང་ལག་ལ་བརྟེན་ནས་སེམས་ཅན་སྣ་མང་གི་བཟོ་ལྟ་འདྲ་འདྲ་པོ་དག་གྲིབ་གཟུགས་སུ་འབེབ་ཐུབ། དེ་དུས། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱི་མི་ཚེའི་ཁྲོད་དུ། ཐོག་དང་པོར་ཁོའི་འཁྲབ་སྟོན་ལ་ལྟ་བའི་ལྟད་མོ་པ་བྱུང་ཞིང་། དེ་དག་ནི་ཁྱིམ་མཚེས་ཀྱི་བྱིས་པ་སྣབས་ལུག་དེ་ཚོ་དང་། ངལ་རྩོལ་གྱི་བར་གསེང་དུ་དགོད་འཛུམ་བསྨུག་བསྨུག་འབྱིན་པའི་ནང་མི་དག་ཡིན། ཡིན་ནའང་། དེ་དུས་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་འཁྲབ་སྟོན་པ་དང་ལྟད་མོ་པའི་ཐད་ལ་མི་ཚེ་དང་སྦྱར་ནས་བསམ་བློ་གཏན་ནས་གཏོང་མི་སྲིད། ཁོར་མཚོན་ན་ཉི་འོད་དང་གྲིབ་གཟུགས་ནི་རི་ཚོགས་ཁོང་གསེང་དུ་ནུབ་པའི་རི་གྲོང་དེ་རུ་བྱིས་དུས་ཀྱི་ཉི་མ་རིང་མོ་དེ་སྐྱེལ་བའི་རྩེད་ཆས་ཙམ་ཡིན། དེར་བརྟེན། ཕྱིས་ཀྱི་ཉི་འོད་ལ་བཅངས་པའི་དམིགས་བསལ་གྱི་དུངས་པ་དང་གྲིབ་གཟུགས་ལས་བྱུང་བའི་སེམས་ཁམས་དེ་དག་ནི་ཕལ་ཆེར་ཁོའི་བྱིས་དུས་དང་འབྲེལ་བ་ཡོད་པ་མ་རེད། 

When Tashi thought back to his childhood, it was as if he were remembering himself from many past lives. Tashi grew up in a valley of the highest plateau in the world, where the sun was closest to the earth. In those days, he did not have many toys to play with, but he had plenty of sunlight. Gradually, he got used to making shadow puppets with sunlight: initially he laughed at the simple shadows of his own body parts and at the simple body movements. Over time, he was able to make shadow puppets of specific animals by using his head, trunk, and limbs. Tashi’s first audience was the other children in the neighborhood, and his family members who smiled and smirked during their work break. At that young age, Tashi couldn’t see the correlation between the life of performer and the life of audience. For him, the sunlight and shadow of his mountainous homeland was simply a plaything that had helped to time pass the long days of childhood. His fondness of sunlight and the emotion caused by shadow as grownup had no interconnection with his childhood.

ལོ་བཅུ་ལྷག་གི་རྗེས་ཀྱི་བར་སྐབས་ཤིག་ནས། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་ནང་ལོགས་ཀྱི་གྲོང་ཁྱེར་ག་གེ་མོའི་བོད་ཀྱི་རིག་གནས་ཞིབ་འཇུག་གི་ལས་ཁུངས་ཆེན་པོ་ཞིག་ཏུ་ལས་ཀ་སྒྲུབ་བཞིན་ཡོད། ལས་ཁུངས་ཀྱི་ཕྱི་སྒོ་བརྒྱུད་དུས། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་མི་རེ་གཉིས་ལ་ལག་བརྡ་རེ་སྟོན་ཞིང་། སྐད་བརྡ་རེ་སྤྲོད་བཞིན་འགྲོ། དེ་ནི་ཉིན་རེར་བསྐྱར་ཟློས་བྱེད་སྲིད་པའི་རྣམ་པ་ཙམ་ཡིན་ལ། མི་དེ་དག་ལ་ཉིན་རེའི་ཞོགས་པར་ཅིས་ཀྱང་འཕྲད་སྲིད་པ་དེ་ནི་འཁོར་རྒྱུག་གི་རང་བཞིན་དུ་གཏན་ཁེལ་བྱུང་ཟིན་པའི་ལྷུ་ལག་རེ་རེ་དང་མཚུངས། དེ་ནི་གོམས་སྲོལ་ཅིག་ཏུ་ཆགས་ཡོད་པས་ཕལ་ཆེར་ཁོ་ཚོ་ཕན་ཚུན་སུ་ཡིན་ཀྱང་དོ་སྣང་བྱེད་མི་སྲིད། འོན་ཀྱང་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་རྣམ་ཀུན་མི་དེ་དག་གི་གྲིབ་གཟུགས་ལ་དོ་སྣང་བྱེད་བཞིན་ཡོད། དོ་སྣང་བྱེད་ཡུན་རིང་བ་དང་བསྟུན་ནས། ཁོས་མགོ་ཡར་འགྱོག་མི་དགོས་པར་མི་དེ་དག་གི་གྲིབ་གཟུགས་ཀྱི་དབྱིབས་དང་རྣམ་པ་ལས་དེ་དག་སུ་དང་གང་ཡིན་པ་ཕལ་ཆེར་ཤེས་བཞིན་ཡོད་ཅིང་། མཚམས་རེར་མགོ་མི་འགྱོག་པར “ཨ་ཁུ་འབུམ་དགའ་བདེ་མོ་ཡིན་ནམ།” “ ཨ་ཅག......” སོགས་ཀྱིས་འཚམས་འདྲི་བྱེད་པ་དང་། མི་དེ་དག་ཐོག་མར་ཁོའི་སྤྱོད་ལམ་དེར་མི་གོམས་ཀྱང་ཕྱིས་སུ་རིམ་གྱིས་གོམས་ནས་འདྲིས་པར་གྱུར། འོན་ཀྱང་ལས་ཁུངས་ཀྱི་མི་མང་བོ་ཞིག་གིས་ཁོར་ལྐོག་ཏུ “བཀྲ་ཤིས་མགོ་སྒུར” ཞེས་པའི་མཚང་མིང་ཞིག་ཀྱང་བཏགས་ཡོད།

Some ten years later, Tashi went to work for a large Tibetan Cultural Research Institution in a mainland city. Every morning, entering the gate of the institution, he waved and greeted some of the other employees. It had become a fixed habit that nobody really paid any extra attention to. Over the years,  Tashi had been watching their shadows, and over time, he came to recognize each employee by his or her shadow. Occasionally he would say, “Hi, Uncle Gathai (dga bde), how are you?” or “Sister XYZ…….” without even looking at them. At the beginning his co-workers were not used to his walking with his head lowered. But, after a while people got used to it, and some of the employees secretly nicknamed him ‘Tashi the head lowerer’.

ཉིན་དེའི་ཞོགས་པར། ཉི་འོད་གྲོང་ཁྱེར་གྱི་ཐོག་ཁང་དག་གི་བར་གསེང་ནས་གསེག་འཕྲོ་བྱས་ཡོང་། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ལས་ཁུངས་ཀྱི་ནང་སྒོའི་ཕྱོགས་སུ་མགོ་སྒྱུར་ནས་སྐྱོད་དུས། མཚམས་ཤིག་ལ་རྒྱུས་མངའ་མེད་པའི་གྲིབ་གཟུགས་ཤིག་ཁོའི་གཡས་ཕྱོགས་ནས་མངོན་ཅིང་བསྲིངས་ཡོང་། དེ་ནི་རྣམ་ཀུན་གཏན་ཁེལ་བྱུང་ཟིན་པའི་འཁོར་རྒྱུག་དེའི་ལྷུ་ལག་ཅིག་མ་རེད། དེ་ནི་མི་རྒྱུས་མེད་ཅིག་གི་གྲིབ་གཟུགས་རེད། དེ་བས། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་མགོ་བོ་ཡར་བཀྱགས་ནས་གཞོགས་སུ་གཅུས་ཏེ་གྲིབ་གཟུགས་དེའི་བདག་པོ་སུ་ཡིན་ལ་བལྟས། །

One morning, as the oblique rays of sunlight shone through the city’s buildings and Tashi walked toward his office with his head lowered in his usual way, an unfamiliar shadow appeared on his right and stretched. The shadow of a stranger! Tashi wanted to know whose shadow it was, he raised his head to look at the owner of that shadow.  

ལོ་ངོ་དུ་མའི་རྗེས་སུ། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་ཉིན་དེའི་ཞོགས་པར་བྱུང་བ་དེ་ལ་ཕྱིར་དྲན་བྱེད་དུས། གཞི་ནས་རང་གི་ལས་དབང་ཁྲོད་ཀྱི་ཆུང་མ་དེའང་འོད་དང་གྲིབ་གཟུགས་ཀྱི་ཐོན་རྫས་ཤིག་ཡིན་པ་རྟོགས། བུ་མོ་དེས་ཕལ་ཆེར་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱི་གདོང་གི་མཚར་ཉམས་དེ་རྟོགས་པ་འདྲ། གདོང་མདོག་ཅུང་དམར་པོར་གྱུར་ནས་མགོ་བོ་མར་སྒུར་སོང་། དེ་ནི་རྒྱུ་དག་ལྡན་ལ་མཛེས་སྡུག་གིས་ཀུན་ནས་ཁྱོགས་པའི་བུ་མོ་ཞིག་རེད། མོ་ནི་ལས་ཁུངས་དེ་གའི་ལས་ཀ་པ་ཞིག་མ་རེད། 

Many years later, when Tashi recalled what had happened that morning, he realized that the woman, who was destined to be his wife, was a product of sunlight and shadow. The woman probably saw Tashi’s mesmerized gaze, and with a blush she lowered her head. She was a virtuous and beautiful woman. She was not an employee of Tashi’s institution. 

མས་ཀྱི་བྱུང་རིམ་ནི་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་གོ་འཛོལ་ཞིག་གིས་ཡོད་ཚད་ལ་འཕལ་ག་འཕྲོད་པར་བྱས་པ་ནམ་ཡང་ཁས་མི་ལེན། སྒོ་སྲུང་པས་བུ་མོ་དེ་ཁོའི་གཞུང་ལས་ཁང་དུ་ཁྲིད་ཡོང་སྐབས། ཏག་ཏག་ལ་ཁོས་གཞུང་ལས་ཁང་གི་སྒེའུ་ཁུང་ལས་འཕྲོས་ཡོང་བའི་ཉི་ཐིག་ཆེན་པོ་དེའི་ཀློང་དུ་ལག་པ་བསྲིངས་ཏེ་ད་སོ་མར་ཕྱི་སྒོ་ནས་མཐོང་བའི་བུ་མོ་དེའི་བཟོ་ལྟ་གྲིབ་གཟུགས་སུ་འབེབ་བཞིན་ཡོད། དེར་བརྟེན། ལོ་ངོ་དུ་མའི་རྗེས་སུ་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་ད་རུང་ཡང་རང་གི་ཆུང་མར་གྱུར་པའི་བུ་མོ་དེ་ཉི་འོད་དང་གྲིབ་གཟུགས་ཀྱིས་གནང་བར་ཡིད་ཆེས་བྱེད་བཞིན་ཡོད། 

Tashi never believed that a simple misunderstanding could lead to everything that happened thereafter. As the gatekeeper was leading the woman to his office, he had been stretching his hands to the pool of sunlight that shone through the office window, creating a shadow puppet of her before they met. Even after many years, Tashi believed the woman who became his wife was given to him by sunlight and shadow.

“བུ་མོ་འདིས་ཁྱོད་འཚོལ་བཞིན་འདུག” སྒོ་སྲུང་པས་སྐད་ཆ་དེ་བཤད་རྗེས་སྒོ་ཕྱི་ནས་གཏན་ཏེ་བུད་སོང་། ཁོའི་གཞུང་ལས་ཁང་དུ་ཡུད་ཙམ་ལ་གྲག་འགུལ་མ་བྱུང་། བཀྲ་ཤིས་དང་བུ་མོ་དེ་གཉིས་རང་རང་ས་ནས་ཅུང་ཧད་པར་གྱུར། དུས་ཚོད་ཐུང་ཐུང་དེ་འདྲ་ཞིག་གི་ནང་དུ་ཁོ་གཉིས་སླར་ཡང་ཕྲད་ཡོང་བ་སུའི་ཡིད་དུ་ཡང་དྲན་མི་སྲིད། 

“She is looking for you,” said the gatekeeper and closed the door on his way out. There was a silent moment as Tashi and the woman gazed at each other: neither of them had thought they would see each other again so soon.

“ང་རབ་བརྟན་གྱི་བུ་མོ་ཡིན།” བུ་མོ་དེས་དོགས་མི་བདེ་བའི་ངང་ལག་པས་རང་གི་སྟོད་གོས་ཀྱི་འདབས་ལ་རེག་བཞིན་སྒོའི་ནང་རོལ་ཏུ་འགྲེང་ནས་བསྡད། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་རང་གི་ལག་པ་ཉི་ཐིག་གི་ཀློང་ནས་ཕྱིར་བསྡུས་ཏེ་ཡར་ལང་བཞིན “འོ། དེ་ནས་སྡོད” ཅེས་ད་སོ་མར་ཉི་ཐིག་གི་ཁྲོད་བུ་མོ་དེའི་ནུ་འབུར་གྱི་བཟོ་ལྟ་འདོད་བྱེད་ཀྱི་མཛུབ་མོ་དེས་མདུན་ཅོག་གི་ཟུར་གྱི་འབོལ་སྟེགས་དེ་བསྟན་ཙམ་བྱས། །

“ང་ངའི་ཨ་ཕས་ཁྱོད་ལ་བསྐུར་པའི་སྒོར་མོ་དེ་ལེན་དུ་ཡོང་བ་ཡིན།” བུ་མོ་མར་བསྡད་ནས་དེ་ལྟར་ལབ།

“འོ...” བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་མྱུར་དུ་དེ་ནི་གོ་འཛོལ་ཞིག་ཡིན་པ་ཚོར། 

   “I am Rabten’s daughter,”said the woman, her discomfort apparent by her frequent touching of the hem of her skirt. Tashi withdrew his hands from the sunlight and stood up. With the finger he had just used to make the curves of the woman, he pointed to the sofa next to his desk. “Oh! please sit down!” he said.

“I am here to collect my father’s money that he sent to you,” said the woman after sitting down.

   “Oh…..” exclaimed Tashi, realizing she was mistaken.

“ཁྱོད་ཀྱི་འཚོལ་བ་དེ་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཁ་ཆེ... ” བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་དེ་མ་ཐག་བཤད་མཚམས་བཞག་ཅིང་དེ་ནས་མགོར་འཕྲུག་ཙམ་བྱས་ཏེ་རང་གི་གུས་པ་བོར་བའི་སྐད་ཆ་དེར་འགྱོད་སེམས་ཤིག་སྐྱེས་ཤིང་དེ་ནས “ཁྱོད་ཀྱིས་ཨ་ཁུ་བཀྲ་ཤིས་འཚོལ་བཞིན་ཡོད་པ་འདྲ། ཧི་ཧི། ངས་ཁྱོད་ལ་ཁོའི་གཞུང་ལས་ཁང་སྟོན” ཞེས་ཡར་ལངས། 

   “You are looking for ‘Tashi the Big Mouth'…..” He immediately scratched his head, feeling guilty for speaking disrespectfully. “You seem to be looking for Uncle Tashi. I will show you his office.”

མ་གཞིར་ལས་ཁུངས་དེར་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཟེར་བ་གཉིས་ཡོད། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ནར་སོན་པ་དང་བསྟུན་ནས་རང་ལ་མིང་འདོགས་མཁན་གྱི་རི་གྲོང་གི་དགོན་རྙིང་ཆུང་ཆུང་དེའི་གྲྭ་རྒན་དེས་སོ་སོར་དམིགས་བསལ་གྱི་ཁྱད་ཆོས་ཅི་ཡང་མེད་པའི་མིང་ཕལ་བ་ཞིག་བཏགས་ཡོད་པ་ཚོར། ཁོ་སློབ་གྲྭར་འགྲིམས་དུས་འཛིན་གྲ་གཅིག་གི་ནང་དུ་མིང་ལ་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཟེར་བ་གསུམ་ཡོད་ཅིང་། ཁོ་ཚོར་དབྱེ་བ་འགེར་བདེ་ཆེད་དགེ་རྒན་གྱིས་མིང་གི་རྗེས་སུ་མི་སོ་སོའི་ལོ་ཚོད་ཀྱི་ཆེ་ཆུང་ལྟར་ཆེ་འབྲིང་ཆུང་གསུམ་སྦྱར་ནས་འབོད་བཞིན་ཡོད། ཕྱིས་སུ། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་རིམ་བཞིན་མི་ཞིག་ལ་མཚོན་ན་མིང་ནི་ཤིན་ཏུ་གལ་ཆེ་བ་རྟོགས་ཤིང་། རང་གི་ལིང་བརྗེ་འདོད་ཀྱི་འདུན་པ་མ་ཡལ་པར་རབ་ཅིག་སོང་ཡང་ཁོའི་འདོད་ཐོག་ལ། འགྲོ་མ་ཐུབ། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་བོད་པ་ཚོར་འཆར་ཡན་གྱི་ནུས་པ་ཞན་པ་བོད་པ་ཚོའི་མིང་ལས་ཀྱང་རྟོགས་ཐུབ་པར་སྙམ། ཕེ། ཕོ་ཐམས་ཅད་བཀྲ་ཤིས། མོ་ཐམས་ཅད་སྒྲོལ་མ། གལ་ཏེ་ཁོ་ཡིན་ཚེ་སོ་སོར་མིང་དཔེ་མི་སྲིད་པ་ཞིག་འདོགས་ངེས་སྙམ། ཡིན་ནའང་ད་ལྟའི་བར་དུ་ཁོའི་ཡིད་དུ་དཔེ་མི་སྲིད་པའི་མིང་བློར་འབབ་པ་ཞིག་འཁོར་མེད། ལས་ཁུངས་དེར་སླེབས་རྗེས། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་མི་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་རང་དང་མིང་གཅིག་པའི་ཨ་ཁུ་བཀྲ་ཤིས་གཉིས་ལ་འབོད་མིང་གི་ཐད་ནས་ཇི་ལྟར་དབྱེ་བ་འགེར་བཞིན་ཡོད་པར་དོ་སྣང་བྱས་མ་མྱོང་། གང་ལྟར་ཀྱང་མི་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་བཀྲ་ཤིས་གཞན་པ་དེ་ལ “བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཁ་ཆེ” ཞེས་འབོད་བཞིན་ཡོད་པ་ལྟར་ཁོས་ཀྱང་དེ་ལྟར་འབོད། །

In fact, the institution had two employees named Tashi. Growing up, Tashi came to realize that the old monk from the small old monastery of his valley gave him a very ordinary name. When he was at school, there were three Tashis in his class, and in order to distinguish them his teacher put one word such as big, middle or small next to their names according to their age. Later on, Tashi realized the importance of having a good name, and he was determined to change his name, but in vain. Tashi thought Tibetans had little imagination. In Tibetan communities, all the males were named Tashi and all the females were named Dolma. If he were to choose a name, he thought he would choose a strong and unique one. However, from that time until now he had not came up with a suitably extraordinary name. Since working at the institution, he had never given a thought as to how others distinguished the two Tashis. Whatever the case may be, he had heard others call the other man Tashi the Big Mouth, so he did the same. 

“བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཁ་ཆེ” ནི་ལས་ཁུངས་དེའི་མགོ་པ་ཆུང་ཆུང་ཞིག་ཡི། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་ཁོའི་ཐད་ཀའི་མགོ་ཁྲིད་འོག་ཏུ་ལས་སྒྲུབ་བྱེད་བཞིན་ཡོད། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་བུ་མོ་དེ “བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཁ་ཆེ” ཡི་གཞུང་ལས་ཁང་དུ་ཁྲིད་ནས་ཕྱིན་དུས། མགོ་པའི་བཞིན་ལ་འཛུམ་ཆུང་ཞིག་ལངས་ནས་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ལ “ཐུགས་རྗེ་ཆེ ” ཞེས་གསུངས་བྱུང་ཡང་། ཕན་ཚུན་གྱི་སེམས་ནང་དུ་འཛུམ་དེ་ནི་གདོང་གི་སྐྱི་གཉེར་བསྡུས་ཙམ་དང་སྐད་ཆ་དེ་ནི་མགྲིན་པའི་ཡན་ནས་ཐོན་པ་ཙམ་ཡིན་པ་གསལ་བོར་ཤེས་ངེས། ལས་ཁུངས་དེའི་མི་སུས་ཀྱང་། བཀྲ་ཤིས་སུ་འབོད་པའི་མི་དེ་གཉིས་ནི་ཁྱི་དང་ར་བཞིན་མཉམ་གནས་ཡོང་རྒྱུ་དཀའ་མོ་ཡིན་པ་ཤེས་ཡོད། བཀྲ་ཤིས་དེ་མ་ཐག་ཕྱིར་རང་གི་གཞུང་ལས་ཁང་དུ་ལོག 

   Tashi the Big Mouth was one of the bosses, and Tashi had worked directly under Tashi the Big Mouth’s guidance. When Tashi led the woman to the other Tashi’s office, Tashi the Big Mouth grinned and said thank you. However, they both knew the smile was insincere: no more than just a skin movement, and the words of thanks were obviously a facetious remark. Everyone knew the two Tashis were like goat and dog (cat and dog). They did not get on at all.

   Tashi returned to his own office after that. 

སློབ་གྲྭ་ཆེན་མོ་མཐར་ཕྱིན་པའི་སྔ་གཞུག་ཏུ། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱང་ལོ་ཚོད་དེའི་ན་གཞོན་ཀུན་དང་མཚུངས་པར་བློ་སྤོབས་འགོག་མེད་ཅིག་གིས་བརྟས་ཡོད། དེ་དུས། བར་སྣང་གི་ཉི་མའི་ཞལ་རས་འཛུམ་གྱིས་ཁེངས་ཡོད་ཅིང་། ས་ཐོག་གི་ཤིས་ཀྱི་གྲིབ་གཟུགས་གྲིམ་ཀྱི་ལེར་འགུལ་བཞིན་ཡོད། ལས་ཁུངས་དེར་བས་ནས་མགོ་པ་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱི་ལག་འོག་ནས་རིག་གནས་ཞིབ་འཇུག་གི་ལས་ཀ་སྒྲུབ་པའི་སྐབས་སུ། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་ལས་ཐོག་གི་ལས་ཀ་ཐམས་ཅད་འཆོལ་མེད་དུ་སྒྲུབ་བཞིན་ཡོད་ཅིང་། རུས་པའི་གཏིང་ནས་སོ་སོའི་ལས་ཀ་དེ་ལ་སྤྲོ་སྣང་གིས་ཁེངས་ཡོད། 

   Prior and after Tashi’s college graduation period, Tashi was also like most teenagers: energetic, adventurous and unstoppably bold. At that time, the sun in the sky smiled, and Tashi’s shadow on the ground flickered energetically. Since coming to that office, Tashi had been engaged in cultural research work under boss Tashi’s guidance. Although in those days Tashi appeared like a typical reckless young man, inside he had a passion for his work.

“ངའི་ལས་ཀའི་སྤྲོ་སྣང་འཇོམས་མཁན་གྱི་ཐད་ཀའི་ཉེས་ཅན་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཁ་ཆེ་ཡིན།” དེ་ནི་ལོ་ངོ་དུ་མའི་རྗེས་སུ་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་རང་གི་མི་ཚེ་ལ་ཕྱིར་དྲན་བྱེད་དུས་ལབ་པའི་སྐད་ཆ་ཞིག་རེད། 

དོན་དག་གི་རྒྱུ་རྐྱེན་ནི་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་ལོ་མཇུག་ཏུ་རང་གི་བོད་ཁུལ་གྱི་མང་ཚོགས་འཚོ་བའི་ཆུ་ཚད་ལ་ཞིབ་རྟོག་བྱས་པའི་ལས་ཀའི་སྙན་ཞུ་ཞིག་གོང་ལ་ཕུལ་སྐབས། ཐོག་མར “བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཁ་ཆེ” ཡི་ས་ནས་སྐྱོན་བརྗོད་རེག་པ་དེ་ཡིན། 

“ཁྱོད་ཀྱིས་འདི་ལྟར་འབྲི་མི་ཉན།” མགོ་པའི་ཁ་ཆེན་པོ་དེའི་ནང་ནས་ཚིག་འབྲུ་དེ་རྣམས་ལ་གཤོག་པ་ཐོགས་པ་བཞིན་ཁ་གཏད་དུ་ཡོད་པའི་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱི་རྣ་ལམ་དུ་འཕུར་ཡོང་། དེ་ནི་གནམ་ངོ་རུབ་ཡོད་པའི་ཉིན་ཞིག་རེད། “བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཁ་ཆེ” ཡི་གཞུང་ལས་ཁང་དུ་ཁང་བའི་གནམ་གཅལ་གྱི་གློག་སྒྲོན་གདལ་རིལ་མ་དེ་སྔར་ཡོད་ཀྱང་། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་རང་གི་གྲིབ་གཟུགས་གང་ལ་བབས་ཡོད་པ་རྙེད་མ་བྱུང་།

   “'Tashi the Big Mouth is the main culprit. He had destroyed my passion for the work I was doing.” Tashi made that statement many years later when he recalled his early life. 

   Here was what happened: when Tashi submitted the annual research report on the living standards of Tibetan people in the Tibet region, Tashi the Big Mouth dismissed the report by saying, “You should not have written what you did.” 

   His boss’s words seemed to have wings which landed right on Tashi’s ear as he faced him. It was a cloudy day and Tashi the Big Mouth’s office was lit with fluorescent ceiling lights, so Tashi’s shadow was nowhere to be found.

“འོན་ཀྱང་དེ་ནི་དོན་དངོས་རེད། ང་དངོས་སུ་བོད་ཁུལ་དུ་སོང་ནས་ཞིབ་རྟོག་བྱས་པའི་དོན་ངོ་མ་དེ་ཡིན།” བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་དེ་ལྟར་བཤད། 

“ཧིན། ཁྱོད་ཀྱི་འདི་ཕོ་གསར་གྱི་རང་རྟགས་ཁོ་ན་རེད།” མགོ་པས་ལག་གི་འབྲི་ཤོག་མཐུག་པོ་དེ་མདུན་ཅོག་ཏུ་ཅལ་སྒྲ་དང་བཅས་གཡུགས་ནས་“འདི་ལྟར་བྲིས་ན་ཏང་དང་རྒྱལ་ཁབ་ཀྱི་སྲིད་ཇུས་དང་མི་མཐུན། ཕྱིར་ཁྱེར་རྣམ་རྩོམ་ནང་གི་གྲངས་ཀ་དེ་དག་དང་ཐ་སྙད་ཁ་ཤས་ལ་བཟོ་བཅོས་བྱས་རྗེས་ཁེར ཤོག” ཟེར།

   “But it is all true. I went to the Tibetan region personally and collected the facts,” replied Tashi.

   “Nonsense! This is just the work of a self-righteous teenager,” said his boss, banging the thick report on the desk. “Writing this way does not line up either with the Party’s interest or with government regulations. Go back and rework some of the numbers and the language, then bring it back!”

ཉིན་ཁ་ཤས་ཀྱི་རྗེས་སུ། ས་གནས་སྔར་བཞིན་མགོ་པའི་གཞུང་ལས་ཁང་རེད། འོན་ཀྱང་མི་སྣ་ཇེ་མང་ལ་སོང་འདུག་སྟེ། ཞིབ་འཇུག་ལས་ཁུངས་དེའི་ཏང་ཨུའི་ཧྲུའུ་ཅི་དང་མགོ་པ་དང་པོ་གཉིས་ཀྱང་ཕེབས་འདུག “བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཁ་ཆེ” ཡི་མདུན་ཅོག་ཏུ་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་བཟོ་བཅོས་ཏོག་ཙམ་ཡང་མ་བྱས་པར་སླར་ཡང་གོང་ལ་ཕུལ་པའི་འབྲི་ཤོག་མཐུག་པོ་དེ་བཞག་འདུག

   A few days later, Tashi returned to meet with his boss. In his boss’s office several others were present: the chairman and two other head officers of the Cultural Research Institution. On Tashi the Big Mouth’s desk sat the resubmitted and unmodified annual report. 

“ཁྱོད་འདི་ཨུ་ཚུགས་གཡག་ལྟར་ཆེ་བ་ཞིག་རེད་ཨང་།” “བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཁ་ཆེ” ཡིས་ལག་པའི་གོང་མཛུབ་ཀྱིས་བཀྲ་ཤིས་སྟོན་བཞིན་དེ་ལྟར་ལབ་ནས་མགོ་བོ་གཡུག་བཞིན་བསྡད། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་ཁོའི་ཐུང་ཞིང་རྒྱགས་པའི་མཛུབ་མོ་ནེམ་པོ་དེར་ལྟ་བཞིན་ཡིད་དུ་ལོ་དེའི་དབྱར་ཁར་བོད་ཁུལ་གྱི་རོང་གྲོང་ཞིག་ཏུ་རྟོག་ཞིབ་ཏུ་བསྐྱོད་དུས། ཁྱིམ་བདག་ཕོ་གཞོན་དེས་ཁོའི་མདུན་ནས་ས་ལ་ཨང་ཀི་བྲིས་ཏེ་ཞིང་པའི་ཡོང་འབབ་ལ་རྩིས་རྒྱག་པའི་ངང་ཚུལ་དེ་དྲན་བྱུང་། ཕོ་གཞོན་དེས་བཀོལ་པ་ཡང་རང་གི་གོང་མཛུབ་རེད། དེ་ནི་སེར་ཀ་གས་ཤིང་སྔོ་དྲེག་ཆགས་པའི་མཛུབ་མོ་ཞིག་རེད། དེ་ནི་ངལ་རྩོལ་གྱི་མཛུབ་མོ་ཞིག་རེད། འོན་ཀྱང་ད་ལྟ “བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཁ་ཆེ” ཡིས་ཏག་ཏག་ལ་རང་གི་གོང་མཛུབ་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱི་ཕྱོགས་ལ་བཙུགས་ཏེ་ཕོ་གཞོན་ཞིང་ལས་པ་དེའི་གོང་མཛུབ་ཀྱིས་རྩིས་བརྒྱབ་པའི་ཡོང་འབབ་ཀྱི་ཁ་གྲངས་བསྣོག་པར་སྐུལ་བཞིན་ཡོད། སྐབས་དེར། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་རང་གི་མཐོ་འབྲིང་གི་སློབ་གྲོགས་ཐར་རྡོ་དྲན་བྱུང་། གལ་ཏེ། ད་ལྟ་མགོ་ཁྲིད་འདི་དག་གི་མདུན་དུ་འགྲེང་ཡོད་པ་དེ་ཐར་རྡོ་ཡིན་ཚེ། “བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཁ་ཆེ” ཡི་ཁ་ཆེན་པོ་དེའི་ནང་དུ་ཁུ་ཚུར་རྡོ་ལོག་ལྟ་བུ་ཞིག་བབས་ཡོད་པ་ནི་ངེས་གཏན་ཡིན་སྙམ། འོན་ཀྱང་། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ནམ་ཡང་ཐར་རྡོ་ལྟ་བུ་ཞིག་འཁྱོངས་མི་སྲིད། དེ་བས་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་མགོ་བོ་སྨད་ནས་རང་གི་གྲིབ་གཟུགས་བཙལ་ནས་བསྡད།

   “Your stubbornness is as big as a yak!” said Tashi the Big Mouth, pointing at Tashi with his index finger and shaking his head. Tashi looked at the short, fat index finger and remembered a young farmer whom he had visited in rural Tibetan last summer. The young man wrote some numbers on the ground in order to calculate his annual income. The young farmer had also used his cracked,  bluish-green index finger to write in the dirt. The index finger of a hard-working farmer. Here in the office Tashi the Big Mouth was pointing with his pudgy index finger at Tashi, demanding that he manipulate the annual income of the young farmer. Suddenly, Tashi remembered his high school classmate Thardo and thought: if Thardo had been the person who was standing in front of these officers, a stone-like fist would have landed on Tashi the Big Mouth’s mouth. But Tashi would never be like Thardo, so he lowered his head and searched for his own shadow.

དེ་ནས་ཏང་ཨུའི་ཧྲུའུ་ཅི་ཡིས་ཁ་གྲག་བྱུང་། “བཀྲ་ཤིས། རྩ་འཛུགས་དང་བསྟུན་རྒྱུ་གལ་ཤིན་ཏུ་ཆེ།” དེ་ནི་འགྲོས་དལ་བའི་སྐད་ཆ་ཞིག་རེད། འོན་ཀྱང་ཚིག་འབྲུ་རེ་རེར་སྒུལ་རྒྱུ་མེད་པའི་ཤུགས་ཀྱིས་ཁེངས་འདུག སྒུལ་རྒྱུ་མེད་པའི་བགས་དེ་ནི་དབང་ཆ་རེད། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་མི་ཚེ་འདིར་ཐོག་དང་པོར་དབང་ཆ་ནི་རྣམ་པ་འདི་འདྲ་ཞིག་གིས་ཀྱང་མཚོན་ཆོག་པ་ཤེས།

   Then, the chairman of the institution spoke up, “Tashi, playing by the rules is vitally important.” 

   What a dull and heavy statement that was! Yet each word contained unshakeable force, and the unshakeable force was the power. That was the very first time that Tashi had came across power used in this way.

མགོ་ཁྲིད་གསུམ་པོས་རེས་མོས་ཀྱིས་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ལ་སློབ་གསོ་གཏོང་མགོ་བརྩམས། འོན་ཀྱང་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་ཁོ་ཚོའི་གྲིབ་གཟུགས་བཙལ་ནས་བསྡད། ཁོས་ཇི་ལྟར་བཙལ་ཀྱང་དེ་ཚོའི་གྲིབ་གཟུགས་མ་རྙེད། མི་དེ་ཚོར་གྲིབ་གཟུགས་མི་འདུག དེ་ནི་ཁོ་ཚོ་གྲིབ་གཟུགས་ཤིག་གི་ཁྲོད་དུ་ཡོད་པས་ཡིན་ངེས། གྲིབ་གཟུགས་ཀྱི་ཁྲོད་དུ་རང་གི་གྲིབ་གཟུགས་མཐོང་མི་སྲིད། དེ་ནི་ཆེས་རྒྱུན་ལྡན་གྱི་འཚོ་བའི་ཉམས་མྱོང་ཞིག་ཡིན་ཀྱང་། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་དེ་ལས་གནས་ལུགས་གཞན་ཞིག་མཐོང་བྱུང་། མགོ་ཁྲིད་ཚོ་ཅི་ཞིག་ལ་གྲིབ་གཟུགས་ཆེན་པོ་ཞིག་གི་འོག་ཏུ་སྒོང་ནས་འདུག་པ་ཤེས་བྱུང་། 

   The chairman and the two officers began to educate Tashi, one after another. Tashi searched for their shadows, and no matter how hard he tried, he failed to find them: they did not have shadows. Perhaps they had been living in one another’s shadow. One could not see one’s own shadow by living in another’s. Although not finding their shadows was a simple observation, Tashi saw a more important lesson: why leaders conceal themselves within large shadows.

“ ཤུ།” བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་དངན་པ་རིང་བོ་ཞིག་འཐེན་རྗེས། “ཁྱེད་ཅག་གི་གསུང་བརྩི” ཞེས་ལབ་ཅིང་ཡར་ལངས་ཏེ་རང་གི་རྩོམ་ཡིག་ཅོག་ཙེའི་སྒང་ནས་ཚུར་བླངས་རྗེས་ཕྱིར་བསྐྱོད། དེ་དུས། མགོ་ཁྲིད་ཚོས་ཁོའི་ངག་ལས་ལྡབ་ལྡིབ་ཅིག་སྨྲ་བཞིན་པ་ཐོས་ཀྱང་ཚིག་འབྲུ་གསལ་བོ་ཞིག་གོ་མ་བྱུང་། 

   “Screw it!” said Tashi to himself and took a deep breath, “I will do as you say.” 

   While he stood up and took the report from the desk,  the head officers saw Tashi mutter under his breath, but they could not make anything out of it.

“ང་ལའང་གྲིབ་གཟུགས་མི་འདུག” བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་བཟླས་པའི་ལང་ལྡིབ་ཀྱི་ཚིག་འབྲུ་ནི་དེ་དག་རེད། ཁོར་མཚོན་ན་དེ་ནི་རང་ལ་ལབ་པ་ཡིན་པ་ཁ་གསལ་དགོས་དོན་མེད། འོན་ཀྱང་མགོ་ཁྲིད་དག་གིས་གཅིག་མཐུན་ངང་བཀ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་ལྡབ་ལྡིབ་ཏུ་སྨྲས་པའི་ཚིག་དེ་ནི་ཁོ་ཚོར་དམོད་པའི་ཚིག་ཅིག་ཡི པར་ངོས་འཛིན་བྱས་སོང་། 

   དེ་ནས་བཟུང་། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ལ་ཡང་བསྐྱར་རང་གི་གྲིབ་གཟུགས་བོར་པའི སྔངས་སྐྲག་བྱུང་།

   “I also do not have a shadow.” Those were the words that Tashi muttered. He said it quietly to himself because it was no one else’s business, but the others all believed that Tashi had cursed them. 

   Since that time, Tashi had always feared that he would lose his shadow again. 

མིའི་རིགས་ཀྱི་སྤྱི་ལོ1997ལོར། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱི་ཕ་རྒན་རྒྱུ་ནད་ལས་མ་ཐར་པར་ཚེ་ལས་འདས་སོང་། ལོ་དེར་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཕོ་ལོ་བཅུ་བདུན་ཡིན། རྫོང་སློབ་འབྲིང་གི་ཐོག་ཁང་གི་བར་ཁྱམས་ཀྱི་ཉི་འོད་སྤྲིན་ནག་དུམ་བུ་ཞིག་གིས་སྡུད་བཞིན་པའི་སྐབས་དེར། འཛིན་གྲྭའི་མགོ་བདག་དགེ་རྒན་དཔལ་མགོན་ཉི་གྲིབ་གཉིས་ཀྱི་ཁ་མཚམས་ནས་མངོན་ཡོང་སྟེ་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ལ་བཀྲ་མི་ཤིས་པའི་བརྡ་དེ་བརྒྱབ། བཀྲ་ཤིས་མགོ་སྒུར་ནས་ཡུད་ཙམ་ལ་བསྡད་ཅིང་རང་གི་མིག་ཆུའི་ཐིགས་པ་ཐར་ཐོར་རིམ་གྱིས་ཡལ་བཞིན་པའི་རང་གི་གྲིབ་གཟུགས་སུ་ལྷུང་བ་མཐོང་། དེ་ནི་མངོན་ཆུང་གི་སེམས་ཀྱི་འགྱུར་བའི་བག་ཆགས་ཤིག་གྲུབ་པའི་གོ་རིམ་ཡིན་པ་འདྲ་སྟེ། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ལ་ཐོག་དང་པོར་རང་གི་གྲིབ་གཟུགས་མཐོང་མི་ཐུབ་པའི་སྔངས་སྐྲག་བྱུང་། ཁོའི་སྣང་བ་ཞིག་ལ་ཞི་བའི་དབྱིངས་སུ་གཤེགས་བཞིན་པའི་ཕ་རྒན་ནི་རང་གི་ཡལ་བཞིན་པའི་གྲིབ་གཟུགས་ལྟ་བུ་རེད། མི་ཞིག་ལ་གྲིབ་གཟུགས་མེད་པ་ནི་ཅི་འདྲའི་འཇིགས་སུ་རུང་བ་ཞིག་རེད་ཨང་། དེ་ནི་འཆི་བའི་རྣམ་པ་ཞིག་ཡིན་ཅིང་། ཤ་ཁྲག་གདོས་བཅས་ཀྱི་ལུས་རྟེན་འདི་ཡལ་ནས་གར་འགྲོ་གཏོལ་མེད་ཀྱི་རྣམ་ཤེས་ཕྱི་གསལ་ནང་གསལ་དེ་ཉི་འོད་མེད་པའི་བར་དོར་འཁྱམ་པའི་རྣམ་པ་ཞིག་རེད་ཨང་།

   In 1997, Tashi’s father passed away from an incurable intestinal disease. That year Tashi was seventeen years old. When a black cloud dimmed the sunlight of the county high school terrace, the teacher in charge of Tashi’s class, Mr. Huakun, appeared right between the light and shadow, and brought the sad news of Tashi’s father’s death. Tashi lowered his head and saw his scattered tear drops vanishing into his shadow. His unconscious mind came up with a terrible thought: what if he could not see his own shadow? How scary that would be! That was a state of death: the physical body disappears, dissolving into a transparent soul in an in-between state, wandering in the shadows.

བཀྲ་ཤིས་ནི་མ་གཞི་ནས་བུ་རྒོད་པོ་ཞིག་ཡིན་ངེས། མིག་ཆུ་འདོན་ཐེངས་རྗེས་ཁོ་སྨིན་ཐག་ཆོད་པར་བྱས་སོང་། དེ་དུས་ཁོ་ནི་མཐོ་འབྲིང་ལོ་རིམ་དང་པོར་སེབས་མ་ཐག་ཡིན། ཁོའི་བོད་ཡིག་གི་རྨང་གཞི་མཐུག་ཅིང་རྒྱ་ཡིག་སོགས་སློབ་ཚན་གཞན་པར་ཡང་བརྩོན་པ་ཤིན་ཏུ་ཆེ། ཁོས་སློབ་གྲྭའི་སྒྲིག་ལམ་སྣ་ཚོགས་ལྟར་འཚོ་བ་རོལ་ཅིང་། རང་གིས་རང་ལ་འཇུན་སྡོམ་ཡང་ཡང་བྱེད། དེ་བས། ཅང་མ་འགོར་པར་ཁོ་འཛིན་གྲྭའི་དཔོན་པོར་བསྐོས། འཛིན་དཔོན་ནི་དོན་སྙིང་ངེས་ཅན་ཞིག་གི་ཆ་ནས་བཤད་ན་དབང་ཆ་ཞིག་རེད། དབང་ཆ་ནི་ཕ་རོལ་པོར་ཐེ་གཏོགས་བྱེད་ཆོག་པའི་ལས་ཀ་ཞིག་རེད། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་ཀྱང་རང་གི་འཛིན་དཔོན་གྱི་དབང་ཆ་ལག་བསྟར་བྱེད་དུས། ཉིན་ཞིག་སློབ་གྲོགས་ཐར་རྡོས་ཁོ་ལ་ཁུ་ཚུར་སྟོན་བཞིན “ཁྱོད་ཀྱིས་ངའི་རང་དབང་ལ་ཐེ་གཏོགས་བྱོས་དང་། ངས་ཁྱོད་ལ་འདི་སྟེར” ཟེར། རྩོད་གཞི་ནི་རང་སྦྱོང་གི་སྐབས་སུ་ཐར་རྡོས་འཛིན་དཔོན་ལ་གནང་བ་མ་ཞུས་པར་གསང་སྤྱོད་དུ་སོང་བས་རེད། དེ་ནི་དབང་ཆ་ལ་ཕོག་ཐུག་བཏང་བའི་བྱ་སྤྱོད་ཅིག་ཡིན་པས་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་བཟོད་སྒོམ་བྱེད་མི་སྲིད། དེ་ནས་ཁ་འཛིང་དང་ལག་འཛིང་རིམ་གྱིས་བྱུང་ཞིང་མཐའ་མར་འཛིན་གྲྭའི་མགོ་བདག་ཐོན་ནས་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱི་གཞོགས་སུ་ལངས་ཏེ་ཐར་རྡོར་རང་སྐྱོན་ངོས་ལེན་ཞུ་རུ་བཅུག ཡིན་ནའང་ཐར་རྡོ་ནི་མ་གཞི་ནས་དབང་ཆ་ཆེན་པོར་སྐྲག་པའི་བུ་ཞིག་གཏན་ནས་མིན་པ་འདྲ། ཁོས་ཚང་མའི་སྔུན་ནས “ཇག་པ་ཡོང་རུང་སྐྱག་པ་གཏོང་དགོས་ཟེར་བའི་ཁ་དཔེ་ལྟར། གཅིན་ཞིག་གཏོང་དུ་འགྲོ་ནའང་འཛིན་དཔོན་ལ་གནང་བ་ཞུ་དགོས་པ་ནི་དཔེ་མི་སྲིད་པ་ཞིག་རེད། ཡང་གཅིག་བཤད་ན་ང་ཚོ་ནི་དུས་རབས་གསར་བའི་ན་གཞོན་ཡིན་པ་ལས་དུས་རབས་རྙིང་བའི་བྲན་གཡོག་ནི་མ་རེད” ཅེས་སྐད་འགྲགས་ཆེན་པོ་འདྲ་ཞིག་ལབ་པ་ན། སློབ་གྲོགས་ཚང་མ་དགོད་ཁ་ཤོར་སོང་། ཕྱིས་སུ། བཀྲ་ཤིས་དང་ཐར་རྡོ་གཉིས་གྲོགས་པོ་ཡག་ཤོས་ཤིག་ཏུ་གྱུར་ཁོ་གཉིས་ནི་དེ་ལྟར་གཤིས་ཀ་མི་མཚུངས་པ་ཞིག་ཡིན་རུང་། དེ་ལྟར་འཆམ་མཐུན་ཡོང་བར་དགེ་སློབ་ཚང་མས་གོ་བ་ལོན་གྱིན་མེད། ཐར་རྡོ་ནི་སློབ་གྲྭ་ཡོངས་སུ་སྒྲིག་ལམ་གཏོར་བཤིག་བྱེད་མཁན་གྱི་ངན་པ་རྟགས་ཅན་ཞིག་ཡིན་ཅིང་། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ནི་སློབ་གྲྭ་ཡོངས་སུ་སྐད་གྲགས་ཆེ་བའི་གསུམ་བཟང་སློབ་མ་ཞིག་ཡིན། དེ་གཉིས་ནི་དེ་ལྟར་དཀར་ནག་མངོན་གསལ་ཞིག་ཡིན་ཀྱང་། མཐའ་མར་སློབ་གྲྭ་དེའི་སློབ་མ་ཚོའི་ཁྲོད་དུ་མཛའ་གཅུགས་ཆེས་དམ་ཟབ་ཡིན་པའི་གྲོགས་པོ་ཆ་ཞིག་ཏུ་གྱུར་སོང་།

   Tashi was resilient and made of stern staff. After that tearful moment he matured. At that time, he was in his first year of high school. He excelled in the Tibetan language but also diligently worked on other subjects, including the Chinese language. He followed school regulations and pushed himself to be the best he could.  He was appointed as class monitor, which gave him the opportunity to intercede in other people’s business. One day, when Tashi was exercising his power as the class monitor, his classmate Thardo showed him his fist and said, “If you interfere in my freedom, I will give you this.” The confrontation related to Thardo going to the bathroom during self-study period without asking the class monitor’s permission. Tashi felt Thardo was demeaning and disrespecting his power. As a result, they quarreled, punches were thrown, and at the end the teacher in charge took Tashi’s side, and demanded that Thardo to admit his wrongdoing. But, Thardo was not someone who could be intimated by power. In front of the whole class, Thardo emphatically said, “According to the proverb, even if burglars break in, you still need to defecate. It is absurd requiring the approval from the class monitor in order to use the bathroom. Moreover, we are teenagers of the twenty-first century, not slavers of the eighteenth century.” All the students laughed. 

   Later, in spite of their obvious differences, Tashi and Thardo became best friends, which was a mystery both to the students and the teachers alike: Thardo took pleasure in breaking the rules, whereas Tashi was well-known as a serious and compliant student. In spite of their obvious differences, they had the strongest friendship bond among all the students. 

ལོ་ངོ་དུ་མའི་རྗེས་སུ། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་རང་གི་མཐོ་འབྲིང་གི་གྲོགས་པོ་ཡག་པོ་དེར་རྗེས་དྲན་ཞུ་སྐབས། སེམས་ཁོང་དུ་ད་དུང་ཡང་གུས་པ་དང་ཡིད་སྨོན་གྱིས་ཁེངས་ཡོད། ཐར་རྡོ་ནི་རང་གཤིས་ཤིན་ཏུ་གསལ་བའི་མི་ཞིག་ཡིན། ཁོའི་ཅི་བསམ་བཤད་ཕོད་ལ་ཅི་བཤད་སྒྲུབ་ཕོད་པའི་སྙིང་སྟོབས་དེ་ནི་དཔུང་སྡེའི་སྔོན་གྱི་དར་ཆ་ཞིག་དང་འདྲ་བར་བཀྲ་ཤིས་རང་གི་ཡིད་ཀྱི་དང་བ་འདྲེན་བཞིན་ཡོད། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་ཕྱིས་སུ་ཐར་རྡོའི “རྣམ་ཐར” རེ་གཉིས་ཡིད་ལ་ཤར་དུས་དབང་མེད་དུ་དགོད་ཁ་འཆོར་བཞིན་ཡོད། 

   Many years later, when Tashi recalled the memories of his best friend, he had only pride and deep respect for him. Thardo was a man of great character: not afraid to speak his mind, stay true to himself, and he had the spirit to dare to act and to take responsibility for his actions. He was like the battle flag, leading soldiers on the battle field. Remembering some of Thardos’ stories brought Tashi joy and uncontrollable laughter. 

བཀྲ་ཤིས་དང་ཐར་རྡོའི་མཛའ་གཅུགས་ཀྱི་འགྲོ་འོང་འབྲེལ་བའི་ཁྲོད་དུ། དོན་རྐྱེན་གཉིས་ཤིག་ལྷམ་མེར་སོ་སོའི་ཕྱིར་དྲན་གྱི་མེ་ལོང་ངོས་སུ་ནམ་རྒྱུན་འཆར་བཞིན་ཡོད། དེ་ནི “ཅུང་པེང་གི་དོན་རྐྱེན” དང “ས་འགུལ་གྱི་དོན་རྐྱེན” གཉིས་ཡིན། དེ་ལས་སྔ་མ་ནི་ཀུན་ལ་སྒྲོག་ཆོག་པའི་དཔའ་རྟགས་ས ཞིག་ཡིན་ཅིང་། ཕྱི་མ་ནི་ཁོ་གཉིས་མ་གཏོགས་གཞན་གྱིས་མི་ཤེས་པའི་གསང་བ་ཞིག་ཡིན། སློབ་གྲྭའི་ཇ་ཁང་གི་ཇ་མ་ཅུང་པེང་འཚོང་མཁན་དེ་ནི་མི་རྒན་སྣབས་ལུགས་ཤིག་རེད། རྣམ་ཀུན་ཁོས་སློབ་མ་ཚོར་ཅུང་པེང་འཚོང་སྐབས་ལག་པས་སྣབས་ཡང་ཡང་འབྱིད་ཅིང་། དེ་ནས་ལག་པ་དེས་དཀར་སོབ་སོབ་དང་རླངས་པ་ཐུ་ལི་ལི་བྱེད་པའི་ཅུང་པེང་བླངས་ཏེ་སློབ་མ་ཚོར་འཚོང་བཞིན་ཡོད། དེ་ལ་སློབ་མ་ཚོ་སྐྱགས་མེར་ཅི་འདྲ་ལྡང་ཞིང་འཚིག་པ་ཅི་འདྲར་ཟ་རུང་གདོང་ལ་འཕུད་མཁན་ཞིག་མ་བྱུང་། ཉིན་ཞིག་ཐར་རྡོ་དང་བཀྲ་ཤིས་གཉིས་ཀྱིས་ཅུང་པེང་ཉོ་སྐབས་ཏག་ཏག་ལ་རྣམ་པ་དེར་ཕྲད་པས། ཐར་རྡོས་སྐད་གསང་མཐོན་པོས “ལས་ངན་ན་ཁྱོད་ཀྱི་སྣབས་ཀྱང་ཟ་དགོས་པ་རེད་དམ” ཞེས་ཇ་མ་དེའི་ཐོང་རྩེ་ནས་བཟུང་སྟེ་ཨུ་ཚུགས་ཆེན་པོས་སློབ་གཙོ་ཡོད་སར་ཁྲིད། རྒྱུ་མཚན་བསྙད་སྐབས་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་ཀྱང་ཟུར་ནས་བདེན་དཔང་བྱས་པས། ཅང་མ་འགོར་བར་ཇ་མ་སྣབས་ལུགས་དེ་སློབ་གཙོའི་བཀའ་ལྟར་ཕྱིར་འཕུད་བྱས་སོང་། དེ་ལ་ཕྱིས་སུ་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས “ཅུང་པེང་དོན་རྐྱེན” ཞེས་ཟེར་བཞིན་ཡོད་ཅིང་། ཐར་རྡོའི་མིང་དེ་ཡང་སློབ་གྲྭ་ཡོངས་སུ་གྲགས་སོང་། 

   Since Tashi and Thardo became best friends, two incidents stood in Tashi’s memory: the steamed bun event and the earthquake event. The steamed-bun event was an act of heroism that should be made public: at the school canteen there was an old cook who sold steamed-buns, and the cook had a runny nose and often wiped his nose with his hand. Without washing, he handed out the fluffy steaming buns to the students. No matter how disgusted the students were, no one ever confronted or challenged him. One day, Thardo and Tashi were getting some buns and saw the disgusting behavior right in front of them. Thardo said furiously, “What a misfortune that we even have to eat your snot!” Then he grabbed the cook by the collar and dragged him to the principal of the school. Tashi acted as a witness to corroborate the cook’s wrongdoing. Within days the runny-nosed cook was fired thanks to the principal’s order. Later, Tashi named the event “The steamed bun incident,” and Thardo became famous in the school.

ཡང་ཉིན་ཞིག་ལ་ས་འགུལ་བྱུང་། ས་འགུལ་གྱིས་སློབ་མ་ཚོའི་མལ་ཁང་ཆེ་ཤོས་ལ་གས་ཀ་བཟོས་པས་ཁང་བ་ཚང་མ་བརྡེབ་པའི་ཉེན་ཁ་བྱུང་། རླུང་འཕྲིན་དང་བརྙན་འཕྲིན་དུ་ཐེངས་དེའི་ས་འགུལ་གྱི་རྒྱུན་ད་རུང་འཇགས་ཤ་སྟག་མིན་པའི་ཉེན་བརྡ་སྒྲོག་གིན་ཡོད་ཅིང་། སློབ་གྲྭས་བདེ་འཇགས་ལ་གཞིགས་ཏེ་སློབ་མ་ཡོངས་རྫོགས་ལུས་རྩལ་ར་བར་བསྡུས། སོ་སོའི་མལ་ཆས་ཐང་ལ་བཏིངས་ཏེ་མཚན་མོར་ཡང་དེ་རུ་ཉལ་དུ་བཅུག དེ་ནི་དབྱར་གཞུང་གི་མཚན་མོ་ཞིག་རེད། བར་སྣང་དུ་སྐར་ཚོགས་མ་གཏོགས་ཟླ་བ་མི་འདུག དགེ་རྒན་ཚོས་ཕོ་མོ་གཞོགས་གཉིས་སུ་བཀར་ཏེ་ཉལ་དུ་བཅུག་ཅིང་། ནམ་གུང་དཀྱིལ་བར་དུ་ཁོ་རེས་མོས་ཀྱིས་བར་མཚམས་དེ་ནས་ཡར་འགྲོ་མར་འགྲོ་བྱེད། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ལ་ཚེ་འདིར་རྔམ་བརྗིད་ཀྱི་རྣམ་པ་དེ་འདྲ་ཞིག་ཡང་བསྐྱར་མཐོང་བའི་གོ་སྐབས་ཡོད་མི་སྲིད། ཕོ་གཞོན་མོ་གཞོན་སྟོང་ཕྲག་ལྷག་ཐང་ཆུང་ཆུང་ཞིག་ཏུ་ཞལ་འདུག་པ་ནི་ཅི་འདྲའི་གསལ་བོར་བརྗོད་དཀའ་བའི་སེམས་ཚོར་ཞིག་རེད་ཨང་།

   The second incident was a secret, known only to Tashi and Thardo. One day there was an earthquake, which caused cracks in the students' largest dormitory and all the houses were in danger of collapsing. Radios and televisions raised the alarm that there could be aftershocks. In light of that the school assembled all students in the sports ground and let them spend the night there for protection and safety. It was a summer night with a sky full of stars, but no moon. The teachers separated the boys to one side and the girls to another side, and the teachers walked up and down in between. Tashi would never have another opportunity in his life to see such a magnificent yet extraordinary situation where thousands of boys and girls were sleeping in such a small space. What an indescribable emotion!

ཡང་ཐར་རྡོ་རེད། ཁོས་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱི་རྣ་རྩར་ཤུབ་བུས “བུ་མོ་ཚོའི་རུམ་ཁ་འབྱེད་དུ་འགྲོ” ཟེར། མཚན་མོ་དེར་ལུས་རྩལ་ཐང་དུ་ཉལ་ཡོད་པའི་སློབ་མ་ལོ་ཕལ་ཆེ་བའི་ཡིད་ལ་དེ་ལྟ་བུའི་འདུན་པ་བྱུང་ཡོད་ཀྱང་། གྲོས་མགོ་དེ་ནི་སྐབས་དེའི་གནས་བབ་ལ་མཚོན་ན་ཅི་འདྲའི་ཉེན་ཁ་ཅན་ཞིག་རེད་ཨང་། འོན་ཀྱང་ཐར་རྡོ་ལ་མཚོན་ན་བཤད་ཐུབ་པ་དེ་ཕལ་ཆེར་སྒྲུབ་ཐུབ་པའི་གདེང་ཚོད་ཡོད། མཚན་མོ་དེར་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ལའང་ལྒང་བུ་སྦོས་པ་ལྟ་བུའི་ཚོར་སྣང་ཞིག་ཡང་ཡང་བྱུང་ཞིང་། ཕྱིས་སུ། ཐར་རྡོའི་ཁར་ཉན་ཏེ་གོག་མ་ནུར་གྱིས་གོམ་པ་ཁ་ཤས་ཀྱི་མཚམས་ན་ཡོད་པའི་བུ་མོ་ཚོའི་ཕྱོགས་སུ་སོང་། 

   “Let’s get into the girls’ blankets!” Thardo whispered to Tashi. Although most of the boys sleeping slept on the sports ground that night, had such a desire, it was a dangerous suggestion. But whenever Thardo dared to speak his mind, he was quite confident in his own abilities. That night Tashi also was feeling confident so he listened to Thardo, and started creeping slowly and silently towards the girls who were steps away.    

མཇུག་འབྲས་ནི་བུ་མོ་གཉིས་ཀྱི་ཨག་སྐད་ཀྱིས་ནམ་གུང་གི་རྨི་ལམ་ཡོད་ཚད་དཀྲོགས་པ་དེ་རེད། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་ད་ལྟ་ཡང་དོན་དེ་དྲན་སྐབས་ཡིད་ལ་སྔངས་འཚབ་ཅིག་འགོག་མེད་དུ་སྐྱེས་ཡོང་། སྐོར་སྐྱོད་བྱེད་པའི་དགེ་རྒན་སླེབས་དུས། ཁོ་གཉིས་སྔ་མོ་ནས་ཕྱིར་རང་མལ་དུ་བྲོས་ནས་ཐར་ཡོད་ཀྱང་། ལག་སྒྲོན་གྱི་འོད་ལས་དགེ་རྒན་དེས་ཁོ་གཉིས་ཡོད་སའི་ཕྱོགས་དེའི་གྲག་འགུལ་ཚོར་འདུག 

   Suddenly, the sound of two girls’ screams broke the silence and put an end to Tashi and Thardo’s dreams. Every time Tashi recalled that particular incident he had unstoppable chills: although both of them managed to escape and had returned to their places before the patrolling teacher arrived, the teacher’s flashlight still caught their movement. 

ཆེས་མཐའ་མཇུག་ལ། ཐར་རྡོ་སློབ་གྲྭ་ནས་ཕྱིར་སྐྲོད་བྱས། ཁོས་མཚན་མོ་དེར་ཁོ་གཅིག་པུ་བུ་མོ་ཚོའི་ཁྲོད་དུ་བསྲེས་པ་ཡིན་ཞེས་ཨུ་ཚུགས་མཐར་སྐྱེལ་བྱས་པས། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཁོ་དང་བསྡོངས་ནས་ཕྱིན་པའི་དོན་དེ་ནམ་ཡང་གསང་བ་ཞིག་ཏུ་གྱུར། དེ་ནི “ས་འགུལ་གྱི་དོན་རྐྱེན” རེད། དོན་རྐྱེན་དེའི་རྗེས་ནས་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཡང་བསྐྱར་སློབ་གྲྭ་དེའི་ནང་དུ་གྲོགས་མེད་ཁེར་རྐྱང་ལྟ་བུ་ཞིག་ཏུ་གྱུར། ཁོའི་སློབ་སྦྱོང་གི་སྦྱངས་འབྲས་སྔར་བཞིན་ཕུལ་དུ་བྱུང་བ་ཡིན་ལ། ཁོ་སྔར་བཞིན་འཛིན་དཔོན་ཡིན། ཡིན་ནའང་ཁོའི་གཤིས་ཀའི་གཏིང་རིམ་ཞིག་ན་འཕོ་འགྱུར་ཞིག་མངོན་ཆུང་གིས་འབྱུང་བཞིན་ཡོད་ཅིང་། དེ་ནི་ཐར་རྡོའི་ས་ནས་བརྒྱུད་འཛིན་བྱས་པའི་གཤིས་ཀ་ཞིག་ཁོའི་རང་གཤིས་སུ་རིམ་གྱིས་སྨིན་ཐག་ཆོད་པའི་གོ་རིམ་ཞིག་རེད། དཔེར་བཞག་ན་ཐར་རྡོའི་གཤིས་ཀ་ནི་ལྷོད་དམ་ཆེ་བའི་ཐ་གུ་ཞིག་ཡིན་ཚེ། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་ཐ་གུ་དེ་རིང་ནས་རིང་དུ་འཐེན་བཞིན་པ་དེའོ། །མཐར་གཏུགས་ན་དེ་ནི་རང་གཤིས་ལ་ཟུར་ཁ་རྣོ་ཞིང་སེམས་ལ་དྲན་པ་དེ་བཤད་ཕོད་སྒྲུབ་ཕོད་པའི་སྙིང་སྟོབས་ཤིག་རེད། 

   In the end, Thardo admitted his guilt but insisted that he was the only person involved, and he was expelled from the school. Tashi’s involvement that night remained a secret forever. That was “The earthquake incident”. After Thardo’s expulsion, Tashi was once again alone in the school without a friend. His grades were still excellent, and he was still the class monitor, but a subtle change to his personality was taking place. It seemed as though Tashi was taking on some of the characteristics of Thardo’s personality subconsciously. If Thardo’s character was a rope which had both loose and tight feature for instant, Tashi was elongating it: as a matter of fact, it was the spirit of having sharp edge personality of being bold in thoughts, speaking and deeds.

ལོ་ལྔའི་རྗེས་སུ། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་ནང་ལོགས་ཀྱི་གྲོང་ཁྱེར་ཞིག་ནས་རང་གི་མཐོ་འབྲིང་གི་གྲོགས་པོ་ཐར་རྡོ་རྒྱ་གར་ལ་འབྲོ་བའི་ལམ་ནས་ཤི་བ་གོ་ཐོས་བྱུང་། སྐབས་དེར། ཁོས་རང་གི་གྲིབ་གཟུགས་ཉི་འོད་ནང་དུ་ག་ལེར་འགུལ་བཞིན་པ་མཐོང་ཞིང་། ཐར་རྡོའི་འདས་རྐྱེན་ཡང་གྲིབ་གཟུགས་ཤིག་ལ་ཅིས་ཀྱང་རག་ལས་སྙམ། 

Five years later, Tashi heard that his friend Thardo had died on his way to India. At that time, Tashi saw his shadow gently moving through the sunlight, and thought his friend’s death was certainly caused by a different shadow.

ཆོས་སྒྲོན་གྱིས་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ལ“ང་ཉིན་དེར་ཁྱོད་ཀྱི་གཞུང་ལས་ཁང་ལ་ཐེངས་གཉིས་པར་ཡོང་བ་ནི་ཁྱོད་ལ་བཀའ་དྲིན་ཞུ་བ་འབའ་ཞིག་གི་ཆེད་དུ་ཡོང་བ་མིན” ཟེར། དེ་དུས་ཁོ་གཉིས་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱི་ས་འོག་གི་ཁང་བ་དེའི་མི་རྐྱང་གི་མལ་ཁྲིའི་ཐོག་ཏུ་གཅེར་བུར་ཉལ་བསྡད་ཡོད། 

“ཁྱོད་ནི་ཉི་འོད་དང་གྲིབ་གཟུགས་ཀྱིས་ང་ལ་གནང་བ་རེད།" བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་གློག་འོད་ལ་བརྟེན་ནས་མལ་ཁྲིའི་འགྲམ་གྱི་རྩིག་ལྡེབས་སུ་ཁྱི་དང་། ཕག་པ། རྟ། ནོར་ལ་སོགས་གྲིབ་གཟུགས་སུ་འབེབ་བཞིན་དེ་སྐད་ལབ།

“ང་ཚེ་གང་བོར་ཁྱོད་དང་གྲིབ་མ་བཞིན་འགྲོག་རྒྱུ་ཡིན།” ཆོས་གྱིས་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱི་སྐད་ཆའི་ནང་དོན་མ་གོ་བས། ལན་དེ་འདྲ་ཞིག་བཏབ།

“ ཁྱོད་ངའི་གྲིབ་གཟུགས་ཁྲོད་དུ་སྡོད་འདོད་དམ།” བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་རྩེད་མོ་རྩེ་མཚམས་བཞག་སྟེ་ཆོས་སྒྲོན་ལ་འོ་ཞིག་བྱས་རྗེས “གྲིབ་གཟུགས་ཁྲོད་སྡོད་པ་ནི་སྡུག་བསྔལ་ཞིག་ཡིན་ཨང” ཟེར། དེ་དུས་ཆོས་སྒྲོན་གྱིས་བཀྲ་ཤིས་མིག་ནང་དུ་འོད་ཀྲིག་ཀྲིག་གི་མཆི་མ་འཁོར་ཡོད་པ་མཐོང་། 

   “On that day when I came to your office for the second time it was not only to show gratitude,” said Chodron to Tashi as they both lay naked on Tashi’s single bed. 

   “You were given to me by sunlight and shadow,” said Tashi, who was using the electric light to make shadow puppets of yaks, dogs, horses and pigs on the wall by the bed.

   “I wanted to spend the rest of my life with you like your shadow,” replied Chodron, not completely understanding what Tashi meant. 

   “Do you want to live in my shadow?” Tashi stopped making shadow puppets and gave Chodron a kiss. “What suffering it is to live in shadow!” At that moment, Chodron saw Tashi’s eyes were glistening with tears.

དེ་ནི་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་རང་གི་བོད་ཁུལ་གྱི་རྟོག་ཞིབ་སྙན་ཞུའི་རྩོམ་ཡིག་དེ་མགོ་ཁྲིད་རྣམ་པའི་ཐུགས་འདོད་བཞིན་བཟོ་བཅོས་བྱས་རྗེས་ཀྱི་ལོ་གཅིག་རྗེས་ཀྱི་མཚན་མོ་ཞིག་རེད། ལོ་གཅིག་གི་རིང་ལ། ཁོ་དང་མགོ་ཁྲིད “བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཁ་ཆེ” གཉིས་ཀྱི་བར་ལ་མངོན་ལྐོག་གང་རུང་ནས་གདོང་གཏུག་མང་བོ་ཞིག་བྱུང་། གདོང་གཏུག་དེ་དག་གི་ཁྲོད་དུ་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ལ་རང་གི་ཟུར་སྣེ་མང་བོ་ཞིག་ཅི་ཞིག་གིས་རྡོར་བཞིན་པའི་སྣང་བ་ཞིག་སྐྱེས། སློབ་གྲྭ་ནས་མཐར་ཕྱིན་མ་ཐག་གི་སྤོབས་སེམས་དང་། དྭངས་གཙང་། བདེན་ལུགས་ཀྱི་ཨུ་ཚུགས་ཚང་མ་ད་ནི་ཁོ་དང་རྒྱང་ཇེ་རིང་ནས་ཇེ་རིང་དུ་བུད་སོང་། སྐབས་དེ་དག་ཏུ་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་སྔོན་ཆད་ཚོར་མ་མྱོང་བའི་གྲིབ་གཟུགས་ཆེན་པོ་ཞིག་རང་ལ་འཕོས་བྱུང་བ་རྟོགས། དེ་ནས་རང་ཉིད་འཇིག་རྟེན་འདིར་ཡལ་བཞིན་པའི་སྔངས་སྐྲག་ཅིག་བྱུང་ཞིང་། རང་གི་གྲིབ་གཟུགས་མི་མཐོང་བའི་སེམས་ནད་དེ་ཇེ་ལྕི་རུ་གྱུར།

   That night was one year after Tashi had resubmitted his revised annual report according to his boss’s will. Over the past year, there were many direct and indirect confrontations between himself and Tashi the Big Mouth. In those confrontations, Tashi felt his personality and character diminishing: the boldness, the genuineness, the persistence of holding onto truth that he had had after graduation were getting farther and farther away from him. A huge shadow, which had he never felt before, had fallen on him. He feared himself disappearing in this world, and that thought eventually increased the mental burden of being unable to see his own shadow. 

ནང་ལོགས་ཀྱི་གྲོང་ཁྱེར་དེ་མདོ་དབུས་མཐོ་སྒང་དང་ཁ་ཐག་ཤིན་ཏུ་རིང་། དེ་རུ་ཡོད་པའི་བོད་ཀྱི་རིག་གནས་ཞིབ་འཇུག་གི་ལས་ཁུངས་དེའི་ནང་གི་བོད་རིགས་ཞིབ་འཇུག་པ་རྣམས་ཕ་ཡུལ་དུ་འཁོར་ཞག་ལ་མ་ཕྱིན་པར་ད་ནི་ལོ་ག་ཚོད་ཕྱིན་ཡོད་དམ། ཁོ་ཚོའི་བུས་ཕྲུག་དག་གིས་ཕ་སྐད་དེ་ཤུལ་ཙམ་ཡང་རྒྱུན་བྱས་མེད། མཚམས་རེར་བཟའ་མི་ཚང་མས་ཅོག་ཙེའི་མཐའ་བསྐོར་ནས་ཐག་རིང་གི་བོད་ཡུལ་ནས་བསྐུར་ཡོང་བའི་ལུག་ཤ་ཟ་དུས་ཆེ་ཆུང་ཚང་མའི་གདོང་ལ་སྤྲོ་སྣང་གིས་ཁེངས་ཡོད། རེད་ཡ། ཤ་ལ་དགའ་བའི་བོད་པའི་རང་གཤིས་དེ་ད་དུང་ཡང་ཁོ་ཚོའི་རུས་གསེང་ཞིག་ཏུ་མངོན་ཆུང་གིས་བསྐུངས་ག ཡིན་ནའང་། དོན་དངོས་སུ། ཐག་རིང་གི་ས་ཆ་དེ་དང་ས་ཆ་དེ་ན་འཚོ་མི་དེ་ཚོ་ད་ལྟ་ཁོ་ཚོར་འབྲེལ་བ་ཅི་ཡོད་དམ། གྲོང་ཁྱེར་དུ་སླེབས་ནས་ད་ནི་དུས་ཚོད་རིང་བོ་ཞིག་ཕྱིན་སོང་། དུས་ཚོད་ནི་ཅི་འདྲའི་འཇིགས་སུ་རུང་བ་ཞིག་རེད་ཨང་། དུངས་ཞེན་དང་། ཨུ་ཚུགས། ཕྱིར་དྲན་གང་ཡིན་ཀྱང་དུས་ཚོད་ཀྱི་བཞུར་རྒྱུན་ཁྲོད་ནས་རིམ་གྱིས་རླུང་ཁའི་དར་ལྕོག་བཞིན་ཚོན་མདོག་མེད་པ་ཞིག་ཏུ་གྱུར་འགྲོ།

   The city where Tashi worked was far from the Tibetan plateau. How many years had it been since the researchers at the Tibetan Cultural Research Institution were able to take a leave to visit their homeland? Their children had barely inherited their native language. Sometimes, their whole family gathered around the table enjoying the mutton that was sent from the deep valleys of Tibet, their faces filled with joy: the Tibetan love of meat was still bred deep in their bones. But, what relation did they actually have with the plateau, which was far away, and with the people living on that plateau? It had been a very long time since they arrived in the city. How terrifying was time! As it passed, their memories and attachments were like the colors of the prayer flags in the wind, gradually fading away.

བཀྲ་ཤིས་ལས་ཁུངས་དེར་ལས་ཞུགས་བྱས་རྗེས། ཕ་ཡུལ་ལ་འགྲོ་བའི་དུས་ཚོད་དང་གོ་སྐབས་ཀྱང་རིམ་གྱིས་ཇེ་ཉུང་དུ་གྱུར། ཁོ་ཡང་བོད་པ་ཀུན་དང་འདྲ་བར་ཕ་ས་གོར་མོ་དེར་དུངས་ཞེན་ཆེ་ཞིང་དྲན་གདུང་གིས་མནར་པའི་མི་ཞིག་ཡིན། འོན་ཀྱང་ཁོའི་དུངས་ཞེན་དེ་ནི་གཞན་དང་མི་འདྲ་བར་ན་ཟུག་ཅིག་ཏུ་གྱུར་ནས་ཡོད། དེ་ནི་གྲིབ་གཟུགས་དང་འབྲེལ་བ་ཡོད་དེ། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་མཚམས་རེར་རང་གི་གྲིབ་གཟུགས་མི་རྙེད་དུས་རང་ཉིད་བོད་པ་ཞིག་ཡིན་པའང་རྨང་ནས་བརྗེད་ཡོད། གྲིབ་གཟུགས་བོར་པའི་དུས་སུ་ཁོའི་སེམས་ཁོང་དུ་སྐྱོ་བས་སྨུག་གིས་བཟུང་ཡོད་ཅིང་། ཡང་དང་ཡང་དུ་བོད་ཅེས་པའི་མིང་འདི་དང་རང་གི་བར་ལ་འབྲེལ་བ་ཅི་ཞིག་ཡོད་པར་བསམ་བློ་བཏང་རུང་། མིང་དོན་ཟུང་དུ་མི་འབྲེལ་བའི་སྡུག་བསྔལ་རབ་དང་རིམ་པ་ཞིག་བྱུང་སོང་། 

   Since Tashi joined the research office, the opportunity to take leave in order to visit his homeland had gradually lessened. Tashi had badly missed his homeland as much as all the other Tibetans.  However, his attachment to his homeland was unlike others; it caused him insufferable pain and suffering, and his yearning for his home was related to shadow: sometimes when Tashi could not find his own shadow, he completely forgot he was a Tibetan, and his heart filled with a fog of melancholy. Over and over again, he reflected on the connection between the name of Tibet and himself, finding no interconnection, and this disconnection caused him immense sufferings.

ང་སུ་ཡིན་ནམ། མཚམས་རེར་བཀྲ་ཤིས་རང་གི་ས་འོག་གི་ཁང་སྒེའུ་ཁུང་གི་ཕར་ལ་བཟུར་པའི་ཉི་ཐིག་གི་མཚམས་སུ་ཀྲོང་ཀྲོང་བསྡད་བོར་ནས་གནད་དོན་དེ་ལ་བསམ་བློ་གཏོང་བཞིན་ཡོད། ཁང་མིག་དེའི་ཕྱི་རོལ་གྲོང་ཁྱེར་དུ། ཁང་རྩེག་ནགས་ཚལ་བཞིན་འཛིངས། མི་ཚོགས་རླབས་བཞིན་འགུལ། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ལ་མཚོན་ན་དེ་དག་རང་དང་འབྲེལ་བ་སྤུ་ཙམ་ཡང་མི་འདུག་དེ་བཞིན་དུ་གྲོང་ཁྱེར་དེ་ལ་མཚོན་ན། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱང་ནེའུ་གསིང་གི་གཞི་རུ་ནུར་བའི་སྲིན་འབུ་ལྟ་བུར་སྣང་། མཚམས་རེར་ཁོ་མགོ་ཐོག་གི་ཐོག་ཁང་དེའི་ཡང་རྩེར་འགོས་ཏེ། མཐའ་འཁོར་གྱི་སྐར་ཚོགས་ཤར་འདྲའི་གློག་སྒྲོན་གྱི་འཇིག་རྟེན་དེར་ཀི་ཤུར་ལན་མང་བཏབ་ཀྱང་། དེ་ལས་ཐ་ན་ཕ་ཡུལ་གྱི་རི་ཚོགས་བཞིན་བྲག་ཅ་ཞིག་ཀྱང་འཁོར་རྒྱུ་མི་འདུག ཟུར་དུ་བཀྱེད་པའི་འཚོ་བ་དེ་ལས་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱི་ཁེར་རྐྱང་ལ་དོན་སྙིང་གཞན་ཞིག་གི་ཁ་དོག་ཡོད། ཁོ་ཁེར་རྐྱང་ངང་སྡོད་དུས། ཆོས་སྒྲོན་སླེབས་བྱུང་། 

   “Who am I?” Sometimes, Tashi reflected on that question while standing in the sunlight that came through his window. In the city outside his small room, tall buildings piled up like trees in the forest and the movement of the crowds seemed like the ocean’s current. Yet for Tashi, all of that had no connection to him, nor he to any part of the city; he was just like an insect crawling in the green meadow. Sometimes, he would go up to the rooftop of his building and scream to the shimmering stars, but the screams did not echo like in the mountain range of his homeland. His voice was lost to the emptiness.

   Then, into his isolation came Chodron.

ཆོས་སྒྲོན་ནི་ཉིན་དེར “བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཁ་ཆེ ” བཙལ་དུ་ཡོང་བའི་བུ་མོ་དེ་ཡིན། མོ་ཕྱིར་འགྲོ་ཁར་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱི་སར་ཡོང་ནས “ད་སོ་མར་ཁྱོད་ལ་འོ་བརྒྱལ་བཟོས་སོང” ཟེར། དེ་ལ་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས “སྐྱོན་མི་འདུག སྐྱོན་མི་འདུག” ཅེས་བརྗོད་ཅིང་ཡར་ལངས་ནས་བུ་མོ་དེ་ཕྱི་སྒོའི་བར་དུ་སྐྱེལ་མ་བྱས། བུ་མོ་དེའི་སྐད་ཆ་དེ་དང་བྱ་སྤྱོད་དེ་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱི་སེམས་ནང་དུ་དེ་འདྲའི་ལྷག་མ་ཞིག་ཏུ་མཐོང་བ་བཞིན། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་མོ་ཕྱི་སྒོའི་བར་དུ་སྐྱེལ་བའི་སྤྱོད་སྟངས་དེའང་མོའི་སེམས་སུ་དེ་འདྲའི་ལྷག་མ་ཞིག་རེད། ཡིན་ནའང་། ཁོ་གཉིས་སུ་ཡིན་ཀྱང་ཕན་ཚུན་ལ་དོན་ལྷག་མ་དེའི་རིགས་སྒྲུབ་པའི་འདུན་པ་ཡོད་པས། གཞི་ནས་ཕྱིས་ཀྱི་བརྩེ་དུངས་ཟེར་བའི་འབྲེལ་བ་དེ་བྱུང་སོང་།

   Chodron was the woman who had come to look for 'Tashi, the big mouth' on that day. As she was leaving, she came to see Tashi. She said, “Sorry that I bothered you before.” 

   “Never mind… never mind…” replied Tashi. Tashi stood up and accompanied her to the gate. Looking back, their words and actions that day seemed trivial. Yet those words and actions laid the foundation of their love relationship. 

   ཆོས་སྒྲོན་གྱིས་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ལ“ང་ཉིན་དེར་ཁྱོད་ཀྱི་གཞུང་ལས་ཁང་ལ་པ་གཉིས་པར་ཡོང་བ་ནི་ཁྱོད་ལ་བཀའ་དྲིན་ཁོ་ན་ཞུ་རུ་ཡོང་བ་མིན” ཟེར། སྐད་ཆ་དེ་ལབ་དུས་ཆོས་སྒྲོན་གྲོང་ཁྱེར་དེའི་སློབ་གྲྭ་ཆེན་མོ་ཞིག་ནས་སློབ་མཐར་ཕྱིན་ཏེ། ཕ་ཡུལ་ལ་ལས་ཀ་བཙལ་དུ་སོང་རུང་ལས་ཀ་འོས་མོ་ཞིག་མི་འདུག་ཅེས་ཕྱིར་ནང་ལོགས་ཀྱི་གྲོང་ཁྱེར་དེའི་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱི་གམ་དུ་ཡོང་བའི་མཚན་མོ་དེ་རེད། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་མོའི་ལུས་ནས་སྔོ་རྩྭའམ་ཅི་ཞིག་གི་དྲི་མ་བསྣམས་པར་གྱུར་ལ། དྲི་མ་དེ་ཡིས་ཁོའི་ཡིད་དུ་རང་གི་ན་ཆུང་གི་མི་ཚེ་སྐྱེལ་སའི་མཐོ་སྒང་གི་ཕ་ས་གོར་མོ་དེ་དང་། དེ་རུ་འཚོ་བའི་ཡུལ་མི་དག ད་དུང་རྟ་དང་། ནོར། ལུག མེ་ཏོག རི་ཆུ་སོགས་དྲན་དུ་བཅུག 

   “On that day when I came to your office for the second time it was not only to thank you,” said Chodron. After graduating from college, Chodron had gone back to her homeland to look for a job, returned to the city having been unsuccessful. Tashi smelled a sort of grassy scent on Chodron, reminded strongly his childhood, of living among his Tibetan neighbors; it reminded him of horses, yaks, sheep, flowers, and the mountains and the rivers of his homeland. 

   “ ཨ་ཕས་ང་ལ་ཨ་ཁུ་བཀྲ་ཤིས་བཙལ་དུ་སོང་དང་། ཁོས་ལས་ཀ་ཐག་གཅོད་བྱེད་ཐུབ་ཟེར།” ཆོས་སྒྲོན་གྱིས་དེ་ལྟར་ལབ་བྱུང་། 

   “ད་དུང་འདི་ཨ་ཁུ་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ལ་དོན་དག་སྒྲུབ་བྱེད་དུ་བྱིན་ཟེར།” ཆོས་སྒྲོན་གྱིས་ཤོག་སྒོར་བརྩེགས་མ་ཞིག་བླངས་ནས་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱི་མིག་ལམ་དུ་བསྟན་ཙམ་བྱས། 

   “གལ་ཏེ་ང་ཁྱོད་ཚོའི་ལས་ཁུངས་སུ་སྡོད་ཐུབ་པ་བྱུང་ཚེ། ཧི་ཧི།” ཆོས་སྒྲོན་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱི་སྐེ་ལ་འཐམས་ཤིང་ཞིམ་མངར་གྱི་འཛུམ་ཞིག་བསྟན་ནས “འུ་གཉིས་ས་འོག་གི་ཁང་བ་འདི་ལས་འདུག་མི་དགོས་ཁོ་ཐག་ཡིན” ཟེར། 

   “Father told me to look for Uncle Tashi because he could help me with my job search,” said Chodron. “Also asked me to give this to Uncle Tashi for his help.” Chodron took out a stack of cash and showed it to Tashi. 

   “If I could work at your office…” said Chodron, wrapping her arms around Tashi’s neck and smiling, “we certainly would not have to live in this basement!”

   བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་གཞི་ནས་འཚོ་བ་སྔ་མོ་ནས་རང་གི་ཇུས་འགོད་ལས་འགོངས་ཡོད་པ་རྟོགས། ཁོས་རང་གི་བསམ་ཚུལ་དང་དགའ་ཕྱོགས། འཆར་འགོད་ཚང་མ་རང་གི་མ་འོངས་པའི་མི་ཚེ་དེ་དང་འབྲེལ་བ་ཆེན་པོ་མེད་པ་རྟོགས་ཤིང་། དེ་དག་ནི་བསམ་ཚུལ་ཙམ་དང་། དགའ་ཕྱོགས་ཙམ། འཆར་འགོད་ཙམ་ཡིན་ཏེ་ཡིད་ལ་དྲན་པ་ཙམ་མ་གཏོགས་ཁོའི་འཚོ་བ་དངོས་ནི་སྔ་མོ་ནས་འཁོར་རྒྱུགས་ཤིག་ཏུ་གཏན་ཁེལ་བྱས་ཡོད་དེ། དེ་ནི་ཁོ་ཞོགས་པ་རྗེ་ལས་ཁུངས་ཀྱི་ཕྱི་སྒོ་ནས་ངེས་གཏན་གྱིས་མི་དེ་དག་ལ་འཕྲད་སྲིད་པ་ལྟར་ཡིད་ལས་འདས་པའི་ཆ་དང་། ཡིད་ངོར་མི་ཤོང་བའི་ཆ་ཞིག་གཏན་ནས་མེད་པ་དང་མཚུངས། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱི་བསམ་ཚུལ་ངོ་མ་ནི་ཆོས་སྒྲོན་སྔོན་ལ་བོད་ཁུལ་བསྐྱོད་ནས་བོད་མང་ཚོགས་དང་ཐག་ཉེ་བའི་ལས་ཀ་ཞིག་བཙལ་རྗེས། ཁོ་ཡང་མི་འགྱངས་པར་ལས་ཁུངས་དེ་དང་མགོ་ཁྲིད “བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཁ་ཆེ” ཡི་མངའ་འོག་ནས་ཕྱིར་བུད་དེ་མཐོ་སྒང་ལ་འགྲོ་རྒྱུ་དེ་རེད། དེ་དུས་བཀྲ་ཤིས་རང་གི་འཆར་འགོད་དེ་ཡིས་ཡིད་འགུལ་ཐེབས་ཡོད། དེ་ནི་གྲིབ་གཟུགས་ཆེན་པོ་ཞིག་གི་གྲིབ་མདངས་ཁྲོད་ནས་ཕྱི་ལ་བུད་དེ། རང་གི་གྲིབ་གཟུགས་འཚོལ་བའི་དགའ་སྤྲོ་ཞིག་ཡིན་ཏེ། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ལ་མཚོན་ན་དེ་ནི་ཅི་འདྲའི་གལ་ཆེ་ཨང་། 

...” མལ་སའི་ནང་དུ། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་ཆོས་སྒྲོན་གྱི་དར་ཟབ་ལྟར་འཇམ་པའི་ལུས་ལ་རེག་བཞིན་ངག་ནས་ཅི་ཡང་ཟེར་རྒྱུ་མ་བྱུང་། །

   Tashi finally realized that his life was long beyond his planning. His ideas, his likes, his plans, all had little to do with his future life. His actual life had long been destined with the same certainty as his encountering the people outside his office every morning, with no surprises or unexpected events. Tashi had hoped that Chodron would go back home to the Tibetan plateau and that she would find a job close to the Tibetan people, and he would join her soon after by leaving the office and his despicable boss for good. Tashi had been excited about that idea. It was like breaking out of a huge shadow, and then to search for his own shadow with excitement. How important that was for him!

   Now, in bed, Tashi touched the silkiness of Chodron’s body and could not say a word.

མིའི་རིགས་ཀྱི་སྤྱི་ལོ1999ལོར། བཀྲ་ཤིས་མཐོ་འབྲིང་ལོ་རིམ་གསུམ་པར་སླེབས། ལོ་དེར་གོ་ལ་གོར་གོར་འདིའི་སྒང་དུ་དོན་རྐྱེན་ཆེན་པོ་མང་བོ་བྱུང་ཡོད་ལས་ཆེ་ཡང་། བཀྲ་ཤིས་དང་ཁོའི་སློབ་གྲོགས་ཚོ་སློབ་གྲྭ་ཆེན་མོར་རྒྱུགས་སྤྲད་ཁའི་བྲེལ་བས་ཁེངས་ཡོད་པས། ཁོ་ཚོར་དེ་དག་ལ་དོ་སྣང་བྱེད་པའི་ཁོམ་པ་ཞིག་ག་ལ་ཡོད། ཡིན་ནའང་། ལོ་དེའི་ཟླ་ལྔ་པའི་ཚེས་བདུན་གྱི་མཚན་མོར། ཨ་མེ་རི་ཁའི་ཁྲིད་མདེལ་ཁ་ཅིག་གིས་ཀྲུང་གོའི་སི་ལ་ཧྥི་ལྷོ་མར་ཡོད་པའི་གཞུང་ཚབ་ཁང་གཏོར་པའི་དོན་རྐྱེན་དེས་ཤར་ཕྱོགས་ཀྱི་ས་ཆེན་འདིའི་སྟེང་གི་མི་ཐམས་ཅད་ལ་དཀྲོག་དཀྲུག་ཆེན་པོ་ཞིག་བཟོས་སོང་། 

In 1999, Tashi was in his senior year. It was a busy time as he and his classmates prepared for finals, and they did not have time to think of anything else. Then, on the night of May 7, America bombed the Chinese embassy in Belgrade, which caused outrage among the people who lived in this big land of the East. 

རྩུབ་སྤྱོད་གང་ཡིན་རུང་རང་དགར་འཇོག་ག་ལ་རུང་། རྒྱལ་ཡོངས་གོང་འོག་ཐམས་ཅད་དུ་ཨ་རིའི་རྩུབ་སྤྱོད་ལ་རྒོལ་བའི་ལས་འགུལ་རབ་དང་རིམ་པ་ལངས། མདོ་དབུས་མཐོ་སྒང་གི་རྫོང་མཁར་ཆུང་ཆུང་དེ་རུའང་རྫོང་ཡོངས་ཀྱི་ལས་བྱེད་པ་ཡོངས་ཀྱི་ཚོགས་འདུ་ཆེན་པོ་ཞིག་བསྐོངས་ཏེ། ཚོགས་སུ་འཐུས་ཚབ་མང་བོས་གང་སྔ་བརྩད་དེ་ཨ་རིའི་ཉེས་སྤྱོད་ལ་ཁ་རྡུང་དྲག་པོ་བཏང་། 

ཚོགས་མི་མང་དྲགས་པས། ཚོགས་ར་དེ་རྫོང་ལུས་རྩལ་ར་བར་བཀོད་སྒྲིག་བྱེད་དགོས་བྱུང་། ཉིན་དེར་གནམ་ངོ་རུབ་ཡོད་པས་རླུང་བུ་བསིལ་མོ་ཞིག་ལྡང་བཞིན་འདུག འོན་ཀྱང་ཚོགས་ར་ཧྲིལ་བོར་གཟབ་ནན་གྱི་རྣམ་པ་ཞིག་གིས་ཁེངས་ཡོད།

   No violence should be ignored. A series of campaigns against America took place across the country; even in the small counties of the high plateau meetings were convened. Many in the meetings rushed to denounce the criminality of the Unites States of America.

   Due to the large attendance, the meeting was shifted to the county sports stadium. It was a gloomy day and a chilly breeze was blowing, but the atmosphere was earnest in the stadium.  

“གཤམ་ནས་རྫོང་སློབ་འབྲིང་གི་སློབ་མ་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་འདུལ་གཏམ་གཏང་རྒྱུ་རེད།” ཚོགས་འདུའི་མདོ་འཛིན་པས་དེ་ལྟར་ལབ་མ་ཐག་ཚོགས་ར་དར་ཅིག་ལ་དབུགས་རྨེག་གེར་གྱུར་ཅིང་། དེ་ནས་ཐལ་མོ་རྡེབ་པའི་སྒྲ་ཆེན་པོ་ཞིག་གྲག་བྱུང་། །

ད་ལྟ་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་ལོ་ངོ་དུ་མའི་སྔོན་གྱི་སྐབས་དེ་ཡིད་ལ་དྲན་དུས། ད་དུང་ཡང་ཅི་ཡིན་འདི་ཡིན་མི་ཤེས་པའི་སེམས་འགུལ་ཞིག་ཐེབས་ཡོང་། ཁོས་ལག་ཏུ་བཟུང་བའི་ཤོག་ལྷེ་དེ་ལྷེམ་ལྷེམ་འདར་ཞིང་། དེའི་ངོས་སུ་ཤེལ་མིག་གིས་སྐམ་རིད་ཀྱི་ངོ་གདོང་ཁེབས་པའི་ཆབ་སྲིད་དགེ་རྒན་གྱིས་བྲིས་པའི་རྒྱ་ཡིག་གི་ཡི་གེ་མང་བོ་ཞིག་ཡོད། ཡི་གེ་རེ་གཉིས་ཀྱི་འོག་ཏུ་ད་དུང་བོད་ཡིག་གི་སྒྲ་སྦྱོར་ཡང་བྱས་ཡོད།

   “Next, Tashi, one of the County High School students, is going to give a motivational speech,” the chairman of the meeting announced. There was a collective gasp, a moment of silence, and then a big round of applause.

   Now, when Tashi recalled that moment of many years ago, he still felt this vague and ignorant excitement. The sheet of paper in his hand flapped viciously.  On it were many Chinese characters written by the Political Science Instructor, whose skinny face was covered by a pair of large glasses. Some of the Chinese characters were dubbed into Tibetan language.

“གུས་ཤིང་བརྩེ་བའི་མགོ་ཁྲིད་རྣམ་པ། རྒྱ་ཆེ་བའི་མང་ཚོགས་ཚོ...” རླུང་བུ་ལྡོམ་པོ་ཞིག་གཡུགས་ཡོང་ནས་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱི་ལག་གི་ཤོག་བུ་ཅུང་མིན་ན་ཁུར་སོང་། འོན་ཀྱང་དེ་ལ་ཞེད་མི་དགོས་ཏེ། ཤོག་བུའི་ངོས་ཀྱི་སྐད་ཆ་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་སྔ་མོ་ནས་བློར་བཟུང་ཡོད་ཅིང་། ཆབ་སྲིད་དགེ་རྒན་གྱི་མ ནས་བློ་རྒྱུགས་ཐེངས་འགར་སྤྲད་ཡོད། ལོ་དུ་མའི་རྗེས་སུ། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་གལ་ཏེ་སྐབས་དེར་རང་གིས་ཤོག་བུའི་ངོས་ཀྱི་སྐད་ཆ་དག་བློར་བཟུང་མེད་ཅིང་རྟག་ཏག་ལ་ཤོག་བུ་དེ་རླུང་བུ་ལྡོམ་པོ་དེས་ཁུར་བ་ཡིན་ན། རང་གིས་གཤམ་གྱི་མི་ཚོགས་ལ་ཅི་ཞིག་བཤད་ངེས་སམ་ཞེས་ཚོད་དཔག་བྱེད། 

   “Respected leaders, my dear audience….” A gust of wind almost blew away Tashi’s sheet of paper. Actually, it would not have mattered if his notes blew away because Tashi had already memorized his speech. He had already recited it in front of his Political Science Instructor several times. Many years later, Tashi imagined what might have happened if he had not learned the speech by heart and if the wind had actually blown away the sheet of paper he was holding.  What would he have said to the public on that day? 

མ་གཞིར་ཅི་ཞིག་བཤད་ངེས་སམ། ཆབ་སྲིད་དགེ་རྒན་གྱིས་བྲིས་པའི་སྐད་ཆ་རླུང་གིས་ཁུར་ཐལ་ཟེར་རམ། ཡང་ན་ཁ་ཕྱིར་འཁོར་ཏེ་ཀྲུའུ་ཞིའི་སྟེགས་བུའི་སྟེང་གི་མགོ་ཁྲིད་རྣམ་པར་ཆབ་སྲིད་དགེ་རྒན་གྱིས་རང་གི་ཚབ་ཏུ་གཏམ་བཤད་སྤེལ་བར་རེ་བ་འདོན་ནམ། གང་ལྟར་ཀྱང་། གནད་དོན་དེ་འདྲ་ཞིག་བྱུང་བའི་དབང་དུ་བཏང་ཚེ། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཅི་བྱ་གཏོལ་མེད་དུ་འགྱུར་ངེས། ཁོ་ནི་དེ་ལྟར་ན་སོ་ཕྲ་ཞིང་། དེ་ལྟར་སློབ་ར་ཆུང་ཆུང་ཞིག་གི་ནང་དུ་སྟབས་བདེ་ངང་འཚར་ལོངས་འབྱུང་བཞིན་ཡོད་པས། ཁོའི་སེམས་པ་ཆུང་ཆུང་དེར་རྒྱལ་སྤྱིའི་རྒྱལ་ཁབ་བར་གྱི་ཉོག་འཛིང་གི་བྱ་བ་དེ་འདྲ་ཞིག་ཇི་ལྟར་ཤོང་ཨང་། 

   What could he say? That the speech was written by the Political Science Instructor and it was blown away by the wind? Or should he have turned his back to the leaders on the podium and told the public the Political Science Instructor had asked him to speak out on his behalf? Whatever the case may be, certainly, Tashi would have been helpless: he was just a young and light-hearted young man, growing up so simply on a small campus. How could his young mind have grasped these international political complexities?

ཐེངས་དེར། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་བདེ་བླག་ངང་ཆབ་སྲིད་དགེ་རྒན་གྱི་སྐད་ཆ་རྣམས་ཚོགས་ཐོག་ནས་བཏོན་ཟིན། ཁོར་མཚོན་ན་ཡིག་ངོས་སུ་ཅི་ཞིག་རྗོད་བཞིན་པ་ནི་གལ་མི་ཆེ་ཞིང་། གལ་ཆེ་བ་ནི་ཆབ་སྲིད་དགེ་རྒན་གྱིས་མཛུབ་སྟོན་བྱས་པའི་ཀློག་འདོན་གྱི་གདངས་འགྲོས་དེ་དག་ལ་ཚོད་འཛིན་བྱེད་རྒྱུ་དེ་རེད། དེ་ནི་མཚམས་རེར་སྐྱོ་བས་ཁེངས་པའི་སྐད་གདངས་དམའ་མོ་ཞིག་དང་། མཚམས་རེར་ཞེ་སྡང་ལངས་པའི་སྐད་གདངས་དྲག་པོ་ཞིག་གིས་ཀློག་དགོས་པ་དེ་རེད། ཉིན་དེར། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་བཏོན་ཟིན་ནས་སྟེགས་བུ་ལས་མར་ཡོང་རྗེས་ཆབ་སྲིད་དགེ་རྒན་གྱིས་ཤེལ་མིག་མར་ཕབ་སྟེ་ཐོད་པའི་རྔུལ་ཆུ་འབྱིད་བཞིན་ཐོག་མར་ཁོར་བསྟོད་པ་བྱས་བྱུང་། “བཀྲ་ཤིས། དཔེ་ཞིག་མི་འདུག” ཟེར།

   But Tashi was able to read his Political Science Instructor’s remarks at the meeting successfully. It did not matter to him what the speech literally meant. It was more important for him to read it with the right rhyme and rhythms that the Political Science Instructor had required: sometimes he should read with a low tone due to melancholy, and sometimes with a high tone due to fury. On that day, when Tashi finished and stepped down from the stage, his Political Science Instructor took off his glasses, wiped away the sweat on his forehead and said, “Tashi, it was excellent.”

   “དགེ་རྒན། ངས་ཁྱོད་ཀྱིས་བཤད་པ་ལྟར་ཅོག་ཙེ་ངོས་སུ་ཁུ་ཚུར་བསྣན་རྒྱུ་བརྗེད་སོང་།” བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་དེ་ལྟར་ཐོད་པའི་རྔུལ་ཆུ་འབྱིད་བཞིན་ལབ། །

   དེ་ནི་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱི་མཐོ་འབྲིང་གི་འཚོ་བའི་ནང་གི་ཆེས་མཇུག་མཐའི་དོན་ཆེན་གཅིག་པུ་ཡིན། དེ་དུས་སློབ་གྲོགས་ཐར་རྡོ་སྔ་མོ་ནས་ཁོའི་འཚོ་བ་དང་ཁ་བྲལ་ཡོད། ཐར་རྡོ་མེད་ཤུལ་ནས། ཁོས་རང་གིས་སྒྲུབ་འདོད་པའི་ལས་ཀ་ཞིག་ཇི་བཞིན་དུ་སྒྲུབ་ཐུབ་བྱུང་བ་ནི་སུ་ལའང་མི་མཐོང་བར་བྱས་ཏེ། འབྲི་དེབ་ཅིག་ལ་རང་མོས་སྙན་ཚིག་མང་བོ་ཞིག་བྲིས་པ་དེ་རེད། འབྲི་དེབ་དེ་ད་ལྟའང་ད་དུང་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱི་དཔེ་སྒྲོམ་ནང་དུ་གཅེས་ཉར་བྱས་ཡོད་ཅིང་། བཀྲ་ཤིས་སེམས་མི་སྐྱིད་དུས་འབྲི་དེབ་དེའི་ནང་གི་སྙན་ཚིག་རེ་གཉིས་ག་ལེར་སྐྱོར་ངེས། 

   “Dear teacher, I forgot to bang on the table with my fist as you directed,” Tashi said, wiping away the sweat on his own forehead.

   That was the last major event in Tashi’s high school life. By then, his classmate Thardo had long disappeared from his life. In Thardo’s absence, whatever Tashi had put his mind to and was successful with, he recorded in the form of free verse in a notebook, and he made sure that no one knew about this. He wrote many free verse passages in that notebook. Tashi still had that notebook, which he had kept very carefully on his shelf, and whenever he felt despondent, he took it out and recited some of the passages from it slowly:

   ང་ནི་བྱ་ཞིག་ཡིན། 

   བར་སྣང་དུ་ལྡིང་སྐོར་རྒྱག་དུས། ཐོགས་མེད་རེག་མེད་དེ་ངའི་གཤོག་པའི་རང་དབང་གི་བདེ་སྐྱིད་ཅིག་ཡིན། 

   ཅེས་དང་། ཡང་སྙན་ཚིག་ཅིག་ཏུ།

    ཉི་འོད་ཡོད་ས་ནས།  

   ཁྱོད་ཀྱིས་རང་ཉིད་གྲིབ་མདངས་སུ་ལུས་པར་སེམས་ཚེགས་བྱེད་མི་དགོས་ལ། 

   ཁྱོད་ཀྱིས་རང་གི་གྲིབ་གཟུགས་འབོར་བར་དེ་བས་ཀྱང་སེམས་ཁུར་བྱེད་མི་དགོས་སོ། །

   བཀྲ་ཤིས་ལས་ཀར་ཞུགས་རྗེས། སྙན་ངག་འབྲི་མཚམས་རྦད་དེ་ཆད་སོང་། ཁོ་མཚམས་རེར་རང་གི་ས་འོག་གི་ཁང་མིག་དོག་མོ་དེ་རུ་འཛུལ་ནས་སྡོད་དུས། སྔོན་ཆད་བྲིས་མྱོང་བའི་སྙན་ངག་དེ་དག་ཀློག་ཅིང་། ཀློག་བཞིན་ཀློག་བཞིན་དེ་དག་ནི་རང་གིས་བྲིས་པ་མིན་པའི་རྒྱུས་མེད་ཀྱི་ཚོར་བ་ཞིག་རྒྱུན་པར་འབྱུང་།

   “…I am a bird

   Drifting in the unimpeded atmosphere

   Is the happiness of my wings’ freedom…” read one piece.

   Another piece read:

   “…Where there is sunlight

   One does not need to worry about oneself becoming a shadow

   Let alone losing one’s shadow….”

   After Tashi started working, he stopped writing free verse completely. Sometimes, when he entered his tiny living quarters and read some of those passages, he had no recollection of writing them.  

   “བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཁ་ཆེ ” གད་མོ་ཆུང་ཆུང་ཞིག་དགོད་བཞིན་དུ་ཆང་དཀར་ཡར་བཀྱགས་ཙམ་བྱས་ཏེ “ད་ལྟ་ང་ཚོའི་ཕོ་གསར་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ལ་སྦྱོང་བརྡར་ཡག་པོ་ཞིག་ཐེབས་འདུག” ཟེར། གསོལ་སྟོན་དུ་བྲེལ་བའི་ཁྲོད་ནས་ཁོམ་སྐབས་ཤིག་བཙལ་ཏེ་ཕེབས་པའི་ལས་ཁུངས་ཀྱི་མགོ་ཁྲིད་ཆེན་པོ་དེ་གཉིས་ཀྱིས་ཀྱང་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ལ “མུ་མཐུད་དུ་སྦྱོང་བརྡར་བྱོས་དང་། མདུན་ལམ་ཆེན་པོ་འདུག” ཅེས་བསྟོད་པ་བྱས་བྱུང་། ཆོས་སྒྲོན་གྱིས་ཧ་ཅང་བསྟུན་ཤེས་ཀྱིས་ཟུར་ཞིག་ནས་མངོན་ཆུང་གིས་མགོ་ཁྲིད་དག་གི་ཆང་དཀར་ལ་ཆང་རེ་བསྣན་ཅིང་། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་ཡང་དང་ཡང་དུ་ཁོང་རྣམ་པར “བཞེས་རོགས་གནོངས་དང་མཆོད་རོགས་གནོངས་དང” ཞེས་ཟས་འབུལ་དང་ཆང་འདྲེན་བྱས། དེ་ལྟར་ཀུན་ལ་བཟི་ཉམས་ཕྲན་བུ་རེ་མངོན་ཡོང་དུས་མགོ་ཁྲིད་དག་གཞི་ནས་གྲལ་ལས་བཤོལ་བའི་སྟ་གོན་བྱས། འགྲོ་ཁར་ཧྲུའུ་ཅིས་བཀྲ ཤིས་དང་ཆོས་སྒྲོན་གཉིས་རང་གི་ལག་པ་གཡས་གཡོན་གྱིས་བཟུང་སྟེ “ང་ཚོ་ནི་རྒས་ཟིན། མ་འོངས་པ་ནི་ཁྱོད་ཅག་གི་རེད” ཅེས་བཟི་

ཉམས་ལ་གཟབ་ནན་འདྲེས་པའི་གཏམ་ཞིག་བཤད་ནས་ཕྱིན་སོང་། 

   Tashi the Big Mouth smiled, lifted his glass of white wine and said, “Now, our young Tashi is well schooled.”  The Chairman and his boss; two officers of the Institution, who took time from their busy schedule of partying, to encourage Tashi by saying, “Keep working hard, the future is bright.” Chodron bowed and catered to the head officers by staying inconspicuously in the background, only coming forward to fill their wine glasses. Tashi repeatedly raised his glass for a toast or offered the head officers food and drink. After some time, when the head officers were a little intoxicated, they prepared to leave. The Chairman grasped Tashi and Chodron’s hands and said tipsily, “We are getting old; the future is yours.” Then he left.

ས་འོག་གི་ཁང་བར་ཕྱིར་ལོག་རྗེས། ཆོས་སྒྲོན་ནི་བྱིས་པ་ཆུང་ཆུང་ཞིག་དང་མཚུངས་པར་དགའ་ཀྲོག་ཀྲོག་བྱེད་ཅིང་། མོས་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ལ་མ་འོངས་པར་ཁང་བ་རྒྱས་ཤོམ་དོད་པོ་ཅི་འདྲ་ཞིག་ཉོ་རྒྱུ་ཡིན་མིན་གྱི་སྐོར་ལ་གྲོས་ཁ་ཡང་ཡང་བྱེད། ཡིན་ནའང་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ལ་གཡུལ་དུ་ཕམ་པའི་ཚོར་བ་ལ་བ་ཅི་ཡང་ལྷག་མི་འདུག ཁོས་ཆོས་སྒྲོན་གྱི་བྱ་བའི་ཆེད་དུ་གཉའ་ཞུམ་ཞུམ་གྱིས་མགོ་ཁྲིད་དག་གདན་འདྲེན་ཞུས་ཤིང་། དེ་ནས་གཉའ་ཞུམ་ཞུམ་གྱིས་དེ་དག་གིས་ཅི་གསུངས་ལ་ཡིན་མདོག་བྱས། རང་གི་ཡར་སྔོན་གྱི་བྱ་སྤྱོད་དག་ལ་སྐྱོན་བརྗོད་བྱས། ད་རུང་གཉའ་ཞུམ་ཞུམ་གྱིས་དེ་དག་ལ་ཟས་འབུལ་ཆང་འདྲེན་བྱས། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་དེ་དག་དྲན་བཞིན་རང་ཉིད་ལ་སྐྱུགས་མེར་འགོག་མེད་ཅིག་ལངས། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་ཅིའི་ཕྱིར་ཡར་སྔོན་གྱི་རང་གི་གཤིས་ཀའི་རྒྱུན་བསྐྱངས་ཏེ་མགོ་ཁྲིད་དག་གིས “བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཁ་ཆེ” བར་བརྒྱུད་ཀྱིས་ཆོས་སྒྲོན་གྱི་སྒོར་མོ་བརྩེགས་མ་རེ་བླངས་པའི་རུལ་སུངས་ཀྱི་བྱ་སྤྱོད་ལ་དགག་པ་ཙམ་ཡང་རྒྱག་མི་ཐུབ་པ་ཡིན་ནམ། དོན་དངོས་དེ་དག་གི་ཐད་དུ། བཀྲ་ཤིས་གཞི་ནས་གཉའ་ཞུམ་ཞུམ་དུ་གྱུར།

   Back in Tashi’s basement, Chodron cheered with childish excitement and talked about what kind of a luxuriously furnished house they should buy in the future. However, Tashi felt a sense of defeat as on the battle field. He had behaved obsequiously to the Chairman and his boss in order to further Chodron’s employment opportunities, and he had kowtowed to everything what they said. He had offered them food and drink sycophantically, and by doing so, he dismissed his true nature and personality. Tashi was disgusted with himself. How could he tolerate the corruption of the leaders when they accepted Chodron’s stack of cash via Tashi the Big Mouth? Tashi felt he had abased himself.

ཁོའི་མདུན་ནས་བར་གྱང་ཞིག་ཆོམ་སྒྲ་དང་བཅས་འགྱེལ་ཅིང་། རྡུལ་འཚུབ་རིམ་གྱིས་དྭངས་རྗེས་ཁོས་ཕ་རོལ་ན་མགོ་པ་བཀྲ་ཤིས་སོགས་ཀྱིས་ཁོར་གཡབ་མོ་བྱེད་བཞིན་པ་མཐོང་། ཁོས་ཞིབ་ཏུ་ལྟ་སྐབས་རང་ཉིད་ཀྱང་མི་དེ་དག་གི་ཁྲོད་དུ་ཡོད་པ་མཐོང་། འོན་ཀྱང་ཁོས་རང་ཉིད་ཇི་ལྟར་བོས་ཀྱང་ཕ་རོལ་པོར་ཉམས་སྣང་ཅི་ཡང་མི་འདུག སྐབས་ཤིག་ལ་ཁོས་མི་དེ་དག་ལ་གྲིབ་གཟུགས་མེད་པ་ཚོར། དེའི་ཁྲོད་ཀྱི་རང་ཉིད་ལའང་གྲིབ་གཟུགས་མི་འདུག དེ་དག་གི་མགོ་ཐོག་ཏུ་སྤྲིན་པ་ནག་པོ་ཞིག་གཅན་གཟན་ཞིག་གིས་མཆེ་གཙིགས་སྡེར་བགྲད་ཀྱི་རྣམ་པ་འཛིན་པའི་ཚུལ་དུ་གྱུར་ཏེ་ས་ཐོག་ལ་གཟས་ནས་མཆོངས་བྱུང་། དེ་ནས་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་ཕ་རོལ་གྱི་རང་ཉིད་ལ་སྐད་ཆེན་པོ་ཞིག་བརྒྱབ། སྐད་རྒྱག་ཐེངས་དེས་ཆོས་སྒྲོན་ཡང་གཉིད་ལས་བསླངས་སོང་། མོས་མིག་འཕུར་བཞིན “བཀྲ་ཤིས། ཁྱོད་ལ་ཅི་བྱུང་སོང” ཟེར། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་མགོ་གཡུགས་ཙམ་བྱས་ཏེ “ཧེ། རྨི་ལམ་འཇིགས་སུ་རུང་བ་ཞིག་རྨིས་སོང་། ཁྱོད་མུ་མཐུད་དུ་གཉིད” ཅེས་ཆོས་སྒྲོན་གྱི་མགོ་ལ་བྱིལ་བྱིལ་ཞིག་བྱས། ཆོས་སྒྲོན་གྱིས་ལུས་ཇེ་བདེར་བཏང་རྗེས་སླར་ཡང་གཉིད་ཀྱི་ཞིང་ཁམས་སུ་བསྐྱོད་སོང་།

   A partition wall collapsed in front of him with a loud noise, and when the dust settled, he saw his boss, Tashi, and others calling to him and motioning for him to join them on the other side. A moment later, he saw himself among them. But no matter how hard he tried to call to himself, there was no reaction at all. After a while, he realized that those people did not have shadows, nor did he. Over their heads was a thick black cloud in the form of monsters with pointy fangs and fierce claws, reaching toward them. Tashi yelled at himself on the other side. The yelling woke Chodron from her sound sleep. Rubbing her eyes, she asked, “Tashi, what happened?” Tashi shook his head and replied, “I had a nightmare. Go back to sleep.” Chodron rubbed her head several times, then went back to sleep.

ནམ་གུང་དུ་ཁང་མིག་ཆུང་ཆུང་དེའི་ནང་དུ། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱི་གཉིད་རྐུན་མས་བརྐུས་སོང་། ཁོ་མལ་སའི་ནང་ནས་ཡར་དགྱེ་སྟེ་ཐ་མག་རྐང་ཞིག་ལ་མེ་བསྒྲོན། སྒེའུ་ཁུང་ལས་འོད་མོག་ཅིག་འཕྲོས་ཡོང་ནས་གམ་གྱི་གཉིད་དུ་ཡུར་པའི་ཆོས་སྒྲོན་གྱི་བཞིན་རས་མུན་པའི་ཁྲོད་ནས་རབ་རིབ་ཅིག་སྣང་ཡོང་། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་ཐོག་དང་པོར་མོ་ལས་ཁུངས་ཀྱི་ཕྱི་སྒོ་ནས་མཐོང་བའི་ངང་ཚུལ་དེ་དྲན་བྱུང་། ཉི་འོད་དང་གྲིབ་གཟུགས་ཀྱིས་ལེགས་སྐྱེས་སུ་ཕུལ་པའི་བུ་མོ་འདི་སུ་ཡིན་ནམ། བུ་མོ་འདི་མ་གཞི་ནས་གྲིབ་མ་ཆེན་པོ་ཞིག་ཡིན་ནམ། བརྩེ་དུངས་ལ་གྲིབ་མ་ཡོད་དམ། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ད་ནས་བཟུང་བུ་མོ་དེའི་གྲིབ་མདངས་སུ་འཆི་རག་བར་དུ་སྡོད་དགོས་སམ། ཇི་ལྟར་གཏིང་ཟབ་མོར་བསམས་ན་དེ་ལྟར་བློ་ཁ་འཛིངས་ནས་ཅི་ཡིན་མི་ཤེས་པ་ཞིག་ཏུ་གྱུར་པས། བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་ཐ་མག་ཐལ་སྒམ་དུ་ཤུགས་ཀྱིས་བཅིར་ཅིང་། རྐང་འཇབ་ལག་འཇབ་ཀྱིས་ཡར་ལངས་ཏེ་སྒེའུ་ཁུང་ཁ་གཏད་ཀྱི་རྐུབ་སྟེགས་སུ་ཀྲོང་ཀྲོང་བོར་བསྡད།

   Tashi sat up in bed and lit a cigarette. A glimmer of light shone through the window and onto Chodron’s face, and her face loomed. Tashi remembered the first time he saw her outside his office gate. Who was this woman gifted by sunlight and shadow? Was she actually a big shadow? Did love have a shadow? Did he have to stay in this woman’s shadow from now until death? The deeper he thought about it, the more confused and lost he became. Tashi snuffed out his cigarette forcefully in the ashtray. Then, he sneaked out of the bed and sat in the nearby chair.

   ཆོས་སྒྲོན་ལ་སྔར་བཞིན་གཉིད་སྐྱིད་པོ་ཞིག་ཁུགས་འདུག མོའི་རྨི་ལམ་དུ་རྒྱས་ཤོམ་དོད་པའི་ཁང་བ་དང་། ཁྲ་ཁྲ་རིག་རིག་གི་ཚོང་ཁང་ཡོད་སྲིད་ཅིང་། ད་དུང་བོད་སྐད་མི་ཤེས་པའི་བུ་བུ་མོ་ཡང་ཡོད་ངེས། །

བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་འོད་མག་མོག་གི་མདངས་ལ་བརྟེན་ནས་འབྲི་དེབ་རྙིང་བ་ཞིག་གི་ཁ་ཕྱེ། དེ་ནས་ཡིག་འབྲུ་རབ་རིབ་ཅིག་མཐོང་ཞིང་། ཁོས་ག་ལེར་མིག་ཤེལ་གྱོན་ནས་ཡིག་འབྲུ་དེ་དག་བཀླགས། དེ་དུས་ཕྱི་རོལ་ཏུ་རིམ་གྱིས་དཀར་གསལ་ཡོངས་སུ་མངོན་ཅིང་། བྱ་བྱིའུ་རེ་གཉིས་ཀྱི་གྲག་སྐད་ཀྱང་ཐོས་ཡོང་། 

   སྐབས་ཤིག་ལ། ཉི་ཐིག་ཅིག་ཡར་སྔོན་དང་མཚུངས་པར་བག་ཕེབས་པའི་ངང་འཇམ་ཅག་གེར་སྒེའུ་ཁུང་གི་ཤེལ་སྒོ་བརྟོལ་ནས་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱི་མདུན་ཅོག་ལ་འཕྲོས་ཡོང་། དེ་ནས་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་ལག་པ་ག་ལེར་ཉི་ཐིག་གི་ནང་དུ་བསྲིངས།

   Chodron was sleeping soundly again. Perhaps she was dreaming of a glamorous home,  or a brightly colorful shopping mall, or children who could not speak Tibetan. 

   In the glimmer of the early dawn light, Tashi opened his old notebook and saw blurred letters. He put on his glasses and slowly started to read them. Outside, the day broke, the light appeared and everywhere became gradually brighter. Tashi heard the sound of one or two birds.

   A shaft of sunlight calmly and quietly shone through the window and fell on Tashi’s desk. Tashi stretched his hands slowly towards the pool of sunlight.
