LiveChinaMusic explores some of the indie scene’s most elusive sounds - bands with a penchant for pushing the boundaries, creating music that defies convention and is all the better for it. Headlining the event are two acts that have made waves with their debut albums - Shijiazhuang’s Police & Pea - an offbeat lo-fi indie outfit that blurs the line shoegaze, noise pop, and synth-filled bedroom pop - and Hangzhou’s Jimaoxin - whose sprawling, audacious, and psych-infused jazz-afflicted rock and roll is primal in its rhythmic pull. They’ll be joined by local DIY genre-smashers Zilu - a Molotov cocktail of candid, vivacious, and volatile punk rock.

Police and Pea - the offbeat lo-fi indie outfit from Shijiazhuang and led by Ji Ziyuan and Ding Xiaolong hits the sweet spot between shoegaze, noise pop, and synth-filled bedroom pop - an eccentric DIY coup de grace that only comes once in a blue moon. Dancing indifferently between kitsch and grace, between the mundane and the spiritual - it strikes a very specific tone - one that’s surreal, honest and always captivating. Hypnotic in its sweet and sour sensibilities - they’re a fresh new voice for a new generation of rockers.

Sprawling, audacious and utterly delightful in its imaginative thrust and swagger - Hangzhou’s Jimaoxin has been rocking the music world this year. There’s a serendipitous aura to the psychedelic-colored jazz-inflected arrangements the band has cooked up that feels above all, ‘in the moment’ - yet cut with the same melodic pop sensibility that made bands like Can and Kikagaku Moyo so irresistible. It’s primal in its rhythmic pull and beguiling in its zigzagging sound.

Rounding out the evening are Shanghai DIY genre-thrashers Zilu, whose candid, vivacious, and volatile punk rock has returned once again with a vengeance and a spanking new lineup. Concentrated chaos - a rollicking swirl of punk, Britpop, ska, and ballad tomfoolery - they create music that’s fun, vulnerable, deranged and twisted - a gut punch that just may leave you gasping for air.
