Milton and Women:
Brooke Conti in Conversation with Hao Tianhu
Abstract: John Milton’s attitudes toward women have troubled many readers, leading Virginia Woolf to describe him as “the first of the masculinists.” However, much of the critique has focused on Eve and on the roles that Milton assigned women within marriage. In this conversation, we will consider the many women in Milton’s early works who do not seem destined for marriage--and whom the poet seems to present as his own poetic, prophetic, and spiritual role models.
Professor Brooke Conti teaches at Cleveland State University. President of the Milton Society of America (2021), she has published Confessions of Faith in Early Modern England (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2014), as well as articles on Shakespeare, Donne, and Milton in journals such as Renaissance Quarterly, Modern Philology, and Milton Studies. She is currently completing a book manuscript, tentatively entitled “Religious Nostalgia from Shakespeare to Milton.”
