Recently, Samantha Christophereti, an Italian astronaut on a mission to the International Space Station, released a series of space photography works through her social media - accompanied by an ancient verse on the cosmos from famed calligrapher Wang Xizhi’s Orchid Pavilion Preface: “Gaze at the infinite expanse of the universe above, before turning our eyes toward the boundless breeds of every being with bliss. Eyes roam, imaginations soar… and one knows the true meaning of joy…” - its placement among her work stirring impassioned responses among netizens at home and abroad.

近日，在国际空间站执行任务的意大利女航天员萨曼萨·克里斯托福雷蒂在社交媒体上发布了一组太空摄影作品，并配上了中国著名书法家王羲之所著《兰亭集序》中一句描绘宇宙景观的古文——“仰观宇宙之大，俯察品类之盛，所以游目骋怀，足以极视听之娱，信可乐也”。此举引发国内外网友热议。

The work cited by Christophereti is, indeed, that of Wang Xizhi, composed in Shaoxing, a city of scenery as breathtaking as its cultural heritage is profound - a city that has nourished the souls of residents and visitors alike for thousands of years.

意大利宇航员引用的《兰亭集序》正是王羲之书于绍兴这座风景优美、文化底蕴深厚的城市。绍兴的文化穿越千年的岁月长河，给予了人们无尽的滋养。

Wang Xizhi (321-379 AD), also known as “Wang Youjun,” was originally a native of Langya (now Linyi, Shandong Province) before settling in Kuaiji, or modern-day Shaoxing, eventually going to Shanxian’s (now Shengzhou county, Shaoxing ) Jinting town to live out his final years.

王羲之（321年-379年），世称“王右军”,字逸少，琅琊（今山东临沂）人，后迁会稽山阴（今浙江绍兴），晚年隐居剡县金庭。

On the third day of March(Chinese Lunar calendar) in the ninth year of the Yonghe period (353 AD) in the Eastern Jin dynasty, Wang Xizhi, accompanied by family and friends, gathered at the Orchid Pavilion - or Lanting, washing away the “dust” of the everyday world from its pure, clean streams, and celebrating his rebirth with rivers of poems and wine. At dinner, Wang, suddenly filled with overwhelming mirth, completed the Orchid Pavilion Preface in one go - its dual and unparalleled mastery in literary prowess and prose alike revered the world over to this day, born unto the world.

东晋永和九年（353）三月初三，王羲之携亲友在兰亭雅集修禊，以清水荡涤尘垢，以诗酒表达快意。席间，王羲之欣然走笔，一气呵成。由此，流传至今、词翰双绝的《兰亭集序》诞生。

The Orchid Pavilion, or Lanting, centered among the winding waters’ serpentine embrace of Liushang Pavilion and Goose Pond Pavilion, is the very place Wang Xizhi penned the masterpiece for the ages - thus becoming a focal point for a myriad of activities and pursuits embracing the history from which its words were forged. It is said that the “鹅”(goose) of the stone tablet marking “Goose Pond Pavilion” was written by Wang himself, with the “池”(pond) as a supplement by his son, Wang Xianzhi. Father and son, uniting as one to create words in stone that would last throughout time...

兰亭以曲水流觞为中心，环绕着流觞亭、鹅池亭等，流觞亭即为《兰亭集序》的完成地，现在成了仿古活动的聚集地。鹅池亭前的石碑相传“鹅”字为王羲之亲手提笔，“池”字则为王献之补写，父子共同写下这一石碑成了一段佳话。

The whole of the Orchid Pavilion is constructed in the style of the Qing and Ming Dynasties, myriad pavilions and dramatic calligraphic stones rising from its grounds. Strolling through the midst of lush, verdant trees, one can't help but feel Wang Xizhi's wise and wondrous words: “Though the green around falls silent, music lost to dearth ... a sip of wine, an odic verse... and all is right. All is mirth.”

整个兰亭为明清风格，园内随处可见各种亭以及苍劲的书法石碑，夹杂在茂盛的树木之间，走在这里，可以感受到王羲之所说的“虽无丝竹管弦之乐，一觞一咏，亦足以畅叙幽情”。

One cannot mention Lanting Scenic Area without its calligraphy museum. Stepping through its gates, the character for “之” rises immediately and unmistakably into sight, beckoning visitors to its depths, where troves of vivid historical accounts and priceless calligraphic works of the Orchid Pavilion await. Completed and opened to the public on April 20, 2015, and encompassing a total area of 12,191 square meters, it currently holds the tile as China’s largest calligraphy museum, as well as the first comprehensive collection of calligraphy and culture surrounding Lanting, and the famed Orchid Pavilion Preface.

提到兰亭景区，还不得不提兰亭书法博物馆。踏进博物馆大门，大大的“之”字映入眼帘。博物馆里有生动有趣的兰亭故事历史图解，亦有宝贵难得的书法展览。博物馆于2015年4月20日落成并对外开放，总建筑面积12191平方米，是目前全国最大的书法专题博物馆，也是目前第一座以《兰亭集序》为主题、全面系统地反映兰亭书法与兰亭文化的专题性博物馆。

Towering mountains… verdant forests… lush and unwavering bamboo… crystal, rolling streams. Lacquered Wupeng boats… black bricks and tiles lining ancient walls… quiet bridges over bubbling brooks and roiling rivers… there is no more authentic and breathtaking embodiment of Shaoxing. This weekend, we walked in the footsteps of the sage himself, Wang Xizhi… feeling, as ancient master and modern cosmonaut alike, the infinity of skies above.

崇山峻岭，茂林修竹，清流激湍。乌蓬小船，青砖黛瓦，小桥流水......都是绍兴最本真、最美好的风景。这个周末，沿着书圣的足迹，一起漫步绍兴。俯仰之间，亦可感宇宙浩渺。
