社会学怎么界定Life course？5种定义与整合（Alwin2012）

当你想到“生命历程”的时候，你想到的是什么？
Life course？！
对，也不对，因为还有很多life-words
比如life span(psychology）， life stage, life cycle, human development
到底这些概念有什么区分，如何定义看上去最为正统的“life course”呢？
来自宾西法尼亚州立大学社会学系教授Alwin 在2012年于aging and life course的旗舰刊物The Journals of Gerontology Series B: Psychological Sciences and Social Sciences上发表了力作：“Integrating Varieties of Life Course Concepts.”，整合提出一个整合的life course概念定义。
实际上，早在2003年（其实在8090s就已经在AJS等刊物上有了争论），Mayer（德国的生命历程学者，好像之前去过Yale也任教过，2009年还在Annual Review of Sociology上发过life course的述评），已经指出了两种分化：
Sociology of life course研究的是制度如何作用于人的一生
Lifespan psychology则研究的是在人生的不同阶段，人的行为适应过程。
但是，这两支之间已经有很多融合，使得硬要作出区分也让人难以接受。
实际上，不光是lifespan vs. Life course之间的纠葛。看看life cycle和life course的定义，也就知道有多么混淆，比如：
Shanahan and Macmillan (2008, p. 40)
. . . the age-graded sequence of roles, opportunities, constraints, and events that shape the biography from birth
to death.
Hogan (2000, p. 1623) 定义的life cycle
. . . the socially defined, age-related sequence of stages individuals pass through beginning with birth and ending
with death . . . (linking) individual aging, the organization of roles in society . . . and reproduction.
简直看不出有多根本的区别。还是来整体看看life words——lifetime, life stage, life pathway, life trajectory, life span, life cycle, life events, life expectancy, life course, life history, life space, lifeworld, and lifestyles. 都有哪些定义吧！
Alwin对这个棘手的问题，提出了他的整合方案：
1. 从biographical time角度看，这些概念不管是指整个一生，还是人的一段，都涉及到aging（增寿）的过程，都是个人在历时长河中的变化，而此番变化涉及到心理、生物、社会机制等等作用于个人之中的（within-person）的变化。并且，从这个角度看来，这些变化是不可逆的，具有【生物/物理】时间依赖性。
——也正是因为如此，生命历程学者也才会转而使用(human) development来强调人之变化是具有多脉络、镶嵌的、向前进的。
——而life cycle所强调的人生不可逆转的固定的序列，也可以在此定义下得到化解。【实际上，这个词可能在整个life words大家庭中是非常早非常早占据学术主导地位吧。在19世纪末便已经常用了。我在下一篇推送中将会介绍Alwin对generation这个概念史考察，也会谈到这一概念。】
In this sense, aging simply refers to changes to individuals that occur over time, that is, within-person change (see Perlmutter, 1988) resulting from some combination of biological, psychological , and social mechanisms. This view of aging is at odds with the traditional view of aging among gerontologists, who define it as a time-dependent process characterized by irreversible changes that lead to progressive loss of functional capacity
2. 从historical time来看，Alwin认为 G.H.Elder的一个贡献实际是将historical time显著出来，比如理解不同的历史时间位置对于不同历史行动者的不同影响。而到了Harris1987时，通过用event, 以及后来使用trajectories，使得life共享了history的时间轴，必须从更加外部的角度来考察历史本身的变化。
3. 如果要从within-person继续谈，那就是在8090s年代兴起讨论的 “马修斯效应”，就是生命历程优势或劣势的累积效应：“ cumulative advantage/disadvantage theory ”(Dannefer, 1987, 1988a, 1988b, 2003; O ’ Rand, 1996; O ’ Rand & Hamil-Luker, 2005) 简单地讲，就是年轻的时候有钱，是不是过了20年还会有钱。年轻时候是屌丝，20年后是不是还翻身不了~~。
4. 由此Alwin进一步延伸出他提出的life principles，有6个【这似乎是在要挑战学界习惯的G.H.Elder提出的那5个原则】

5. Alwin将他的框架，更加图示化——只是比Riley（1973）的黑白照变成了彩照~~。
从这个图示来看，Alwin认为，生命历程研究“基础实在”（fundamental reality）是传记时间和历史时间的相互缠绕，而传记时间上承载着“within-person change”（我真不知道怎么翻译这个词才好~~~~）。同时，一旦尊重human agency，那意味着life stages划分和 life events, transitions可能并不一致（行动者可以自己给出定义，社会环境也可以给出定义）。当然，以上种种，都是要接受cohort的前提下：knowing a person ’s cohort membership。
