Did you know that avocados — while considered nutritious — are actually detrimental to the environment when we produce and ship them in such mass quantities as we are demanding?

Not only does transporting avocados all over the world have a massive carbon footprint, but growing the crops alone requires huge amounts of water, in regions that are already strapped for this precious resource.

So, in order to keep you AND the environment healthy and happy, we teamed up with our friends at GOMA GREENS to bring you some tips to eat better food, without damaging the earth it came from.

I'm eating a mostly plant-based diet and cooking a lot more to reduce the amount of plastic. Whenever I can, I buy my produce from local farms that practice organic and regenerative farming practices.

I'm also experimenting with gluten free to improve my digestion and overall health.

If you're not able to let go of your beloved juicy steak, or morning sausage, we implore you to at least be more mindful.

Grass-fed cows produce meat with properties that reduce inflammation and have been tied to a lower risk of heart disease, stroke, and Type 2 diabetes. Grass feeding also has a much lower environmental impact

Food delivery uses mainly styrofoam or other non-recyclable packagings such as plastic utensils, straws, and bags. Transporting all that food also comes at a huge cost to the environment.

For me, eating 'sustainably' means eating in a way that is healthy for the planet and healthy for me. A big part of this means knowing what I eat, and knowing where it comes from. So I cook a lot, take my own lunch box, almost everyday in fact, and I stick to a vegetarian diet.

Increasingly, I'm also reducing my intake of animal products, although I must admit that Shanghai is still far away from having a good variety of plant-based products that are affordable enough.

If you’re going to be eating less meat, supplement your diet with beans and nuts!

Beans and nuts are packed with;

Just make sure to DO YOUR RESEARCH!

Some nuts require lots of water to produce, so you'll do more harm than good. HAZELNUTS are a great example of a nut that is both good for you and kind to the environment. They can grow in harsh climates and require little water & upkeep.

People who cook have higher energy levels, better mental health, and healthier weight. But cooking benefits go beyond you. It helps the world!
