At Daystar, we strive to explore and achieve the true meaning of education—
Founded in 2002, Daystar is dedicated to offering a balanced Chinese-English bilingual and bicultural education to cultivate world citizens with both Chinese and Western cultural backgrounds. At the time of its founding, Daystar was one of the few schools in Beijing with such a forward-looking and international educational vision.
It is for this reason that Daystar has continued to make substantial and rapid development as a pioneer with a positive impact on society.
In 2021, Daystar integrated its strong foundation in character education and its commitment to service that were already a part of daily teaching and community life into a systematic project called the Social Innovation Program. Daystar aims to use this program to move towards its educational goals—inspiring and guiding the energy, skills, knowledge, talents, and character of each student to make this world a better place. We encourage students to develop their knowledge, passions and interests in achieving their own social and life values and to use these to help society.
Over the past year, the Social Innovation Program was progressively implemented in the Daystar community and many milestones were reached, all of which are included in the Social Innovation Progress Report 2021-2022.
Foreword
“
This, our inaugural Social Innovation Report, is a means of highlighting the exciting progress made from 2021-2022 and the path forward in achieving our 3-year strategic goals around Social Innovation. These include imbuing students, staff and parents with a social innovation mindset, developing a world class K-12 social innovation program at Daystar, supporting the development of youth social innovators in China through the Qi Social Innovation Center, and demonstrating that we are a sector leader through our commitment to positive social change.
Being the first school in China to develop a bespoke Social Innovation Program, Daystar is charting a new path, building upon its strong foundation in character education. This report highlights our progress with photos, statistics, quotes from students and staff, and an acknowledgement of all those who have been part of the process.
While we recognize we are still at the beginning of this journey, we are excited to share our progress, and to inspire more schools and collaborator organizations to join us on this path. Together we can use our knowledge, skills and talents to innovate for the good of society! We hope you enjoy reading our first Social Innovation Progress Report. Why are We Dedicated to Cultivating Social Innovators?
People and the planet are both facing severe challenges. Fortunately, more and more young people are deeply intrigued by the world they live in and are able to find meaningful ways to utilize their talents and skills. Through the social innovation program, these young Daystar students will have an opportunity to demonstrate and test their determination and creativity as they grow into future world leaders who will help address both domestic and global challenges.
In addition, more than half of the world’s top 50 universities have established social innovation centers. In speaking with experts at these universities, they shared a common insight—cultivating social innovators should begin before students get to university.
What is the Underlying Architecture of the Social Innovation Program?
Over the past year, we have built a social innovation team, opened the Qi Social Innovation Center, formulated a three-year development strategy around social innovation with help from school leaders, designed a research-based comepetency framework for K-12 to nurture social innovators, and piloted 9 new social innovation program elements spanning different grades.
To help members of the Daystar community understand and invest in the Program, our social innovation team conducted numerous trainings and workshops and established the Social Innovation Parent Committee.
9 Social Innovation Competencies
What Practical Projects have been Launched through the Social Innovation Program?
Over the past year, Daystar established the Social Innovation Program to link to the IB K-12 system. By combining original program features with new elements, nine interesting and significant programs were implemented, with 99% of our secondary students participating. The new or expanded program elements include:
1. SDG Photo Challenge
Daystar has held two SDG Photo Challenges, attracting the attention of more and more community members. Participants use photography to demonstrate their concern and understanding of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals. After the Challenge, the winning works are framed for display on the campus. We are glad to see that students from elementary to secondary school all want to participate.
2. Projects for Change (PFC)
Daystar middle school students conduct in-depth research and choose projects they are interested in related to the themes of sustainable development, health and well-being, universal education, poverty alleviation, and animal protection or supporting a community organization.
PFC also links to the IB service as action and also prepares students for the MYP personal projects that students will complete in grade 10. While completing the team-based projects for change, they engage with various communities and hone skills necessary for the MYP.
PFC is also unique due to the participation of parent mentors. Passionate Daystar parents offer advice based on their empirical and practical expertise in a wide variety of fields to give students a rich experience.
3. Community Connection Trips
Classroom learning is indeed important, but it is also important for students to leave campus to take in different kinds of knowledge. Daystar organizes experiential trips to Beijing suburbs to enable students to be immersed in life in rural communities. Such learning experiences give students a deeper understanding of the challenges facing nearby communities and inspire them to think about how to make a positive difference.
4. Phoenix Forums and SI Marketplace
Throughout the semester, Daystar holds regular Phoenix Forums and Social Innovation Marketplace, providing a stage for students to display their works, raise funds, share their talents, and raise awareness for their social innovation projects.
We do our best to open the Social Innovation Marketplace and Phoenix Forum to the whole Daystar community so that parents, teachers, and even elementary school students can participate.
5. Inno-Imagine Grants
Inno-Imagine Grants are available for Grade K-12 students to provide funding and guidance to them to create their own unique Social Innovation projects on campus or in the nearby community. It all beings with courage to develop an idea. The Committee reviews the grant applications and provides feedback and funding as appropriate. One excellent example is the Olympic Postcards project by Sanlitun Grade 2 students that were sold in bookstores in the community and raised 5000RMB for stray animals.
6. Social Innovation Course
The Social Innovation Course for Grade 10/11 students, modeled after Columbia University’s “Venture for All,” officially launched. The course guides students to discover their own strengths, solve critical problems using design thinking and action, and to integrate theories and practices of entrepreneurship, innovation, and leadership. All the knowledge and skills students learn from the course can be directly applied to their capstone Social Innovation projects.
7. “Week for Change” returns
After being postponed for two years due to COVID-19, on May 16, 2022, “Week for Change” returned as an online event for elementary and middle school students at the Daystar Sanlitun and Beigao campuses. During this week, students connected directly with the 3 charity organizations that they supported: Power Baseball Angels, Blue Sky Healing Home, and the Global Environmental Institute (GEI). They learned about their programs and also raised 39,248RMB through various activities. The event culminated in an online celebration: student and teacher representatives shared their feelings and reflections with the Daystar community and called on everyone to maintain this Daystar tradition and make a positive difference in the world around us.
8. Two types of internship programs for students
At Daystar, we have prepared two types of internship programs for students: Inno Ready and Inno Sprint. Inno Ready provides students the opportunity to explore future career paths by working in an organization related to their future field of study, while Inno Sprint helps student teams launch their own social ventures through an incubator program. Both internship programs also support the IB CAS requirements and are intertwined with academic achievement.
9. Establishing the Qi Social Innovation Center
The Qi Social Innovation Center was established at Daystar this past year. Influential people were invited to deliver speeches and launch the Qi Ignite Fund through the combined efforts of Daystar parents, faculty, and others outside the campus.
The Qi Ignite Fund serves as another powerful engine to help high school students launch their social ventures through the Pitching for Change Challenge. 5 Daystar teams competed in Pitching for Change 2022 and the competition organized by the Qi Center will open up to other high schools to participate in 2023.
Daystar is fully committed to developing social innovators and continues to make remarkable progress on this journey. We hope our students will utilize the school resources, maintain a service-oriented social innovation mindset, and find their ideal future career while remaining firm in the core values as they make their way through this complex world.
By developing this Social Innovation Progress Report we hope to inspire and engage with more community organizations, companies, schools and families who also want to be social innovators.
